The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) recognized several members of the Binghamton University Social Work Department during its New York State Chapter Conference this month.

Emily Tier ’11, MPA-MSW ’16, received 2016 Student of the Year. Tier, who also received a SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence in 2016, worked for the Social Work Department as a graduate assistant, supporting its research initiatives, resource development and marketing/recruitment efforts. The NASW-NYS Chapter highlighted Tier’s dedication, hardworking attitude and compassion for others.

Michelle Benedett, a second-year student in the Master of Social Work Program (MSW), was elected to the Statewide Board of Directors as the MSW student representative. Benedett will help facilitate stronger linkages between MSW students at Binghamton University and the NASW’s national organization and regional chapter.

Victoria Rizzo, department chair and associate professor, accepted Organization of the Year on behalf of the New York State Association of Deans and Directors of Schools of Social Work, and the New York State Social Work Education Association. Rizzo serves as president of the New York State Association of Deans and Directors of Schools of Social Work. Both organizations were recognized for their ongoing commitment to NASW in terms of licensing, loan forgiveness, and the Legislative Education and Advocacy Day.
