Sophomore Chris Egan captured the men’s one meter diving title, highlighting Binghamton’s performance at the first day of the America East Swimming & Diving Championships. Through three events, both the Bearcat men’s and women’s teams are in the lead of the four-day meet, which is being hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Led by Egan, the Binghamton divers dominated the men’s three-meter competition and the women’s one-meter event. The Bearcats had four of the top eight finishers on each side.

“We had a really good night to start the weekend,” head coach Jerry Cummiskey said. “The divers had an amazing night with four in each of the top eight. They really set the tone for the week to come.”

Egan’s title is the first of his career. His winning score in the finals was 277.35. He was followed by freshman Ryan Cohn in second (262.70), junior David Walters in fourth (247.95) and junior Erik Temple was fifth (234.85).

Junior Sophia Howard paced the Bearcat women with a third-place finish in the women’s one-meter event. Her score in the finals was 221.10. Sophomore Amanda McGraw was fourth (211.35) followed by freshman Chloe Peterson in sixth place (199.50) and senior Jaime Campbell in eighth place (188.25).

Also on the men’s side, Binghamton placed second in both the 800 free relay and the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Benjamin Beldner swam in both events. He was joined in the 800 free relay by seniors Dylan Van Manen and Ross Bernstein as well as freshman Ryan Maierle. The 200 medley relay also included senior Tyler Meyers, sophomore Ryan Board and freshman Justin Meyn.

The America East swimming & diving championships continue with Day Two on Friday.

“We are in a good spot after night one but we have a long way to go and a lot more in us,” Cummiskey said. “We are excited to get back and compete tomorrow.”
