America East releases Spring Honor Roll
In the midst of a challenging several months, Binghamton’s student-athletes continue to shine in their studies.
The America East has released its Spring 2020 Academic Honor Roll, which includes all winter and spring sports whose championship events are sponsored by the conference. All student-athletes who maintained at least a 3.0 GPA for the recent spring semester were named to the America East Honor Roll.
Binghamton led the nine conference institutions with 96 percent of all eligible student-athletes making the list. UMBC was second with 93 percent followed by Stony Brook (90), Hartford (88), Vermont (85) and New Hampshire (84).
The sports of men’s and women’s swimming & diving, basketball, track & field and lacrosse, as well as softball and baseball were included in the America East Honor Roll. There were 271 eligible student-athletes from Binghamton that were chosen.
In addition, those student-athletes who maintained at least a 3.5 GPA for the recent spring semester were also named to the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll. There were 198 selections from Binghamton – good enough for a conference-best 70 percent of eligible selections.
There were six Binghamton programs that posted a perfect 100 percent of eligible student-athletes on the America East Spring 2020 Honor Roll. This included both basketball and swimming & diving teams as well as softball and women’s lacrosse.
“We are very proud of all of our student-athletes for the working they did under challenging circumstances in the spring,” Binghamton Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott said. “We look forward to welcoming them back in the fall and seeing them back playing in the future.”
No other conference school had more than three of its programs with a percent percentage of eligible student-athletes on the America East Honor Roll.
Men’s soccer earns national academic honor
For the 16th time since 2002, the Binghamton men’s soccer team has earned Team Academic Honors from the United Soccer Coaches (formerly known as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America).
In order to earn NSCAA Team Academic Honors, a program has to have compiled an overall GPA of a 3.00 or higher during an academic year. The Bearcats attained a 3.45 GPA during the 2019-20 academic year despite the COVID-19 pandemic forcing classes to go online back in March.
“All coaches are really proud in how their teams responded to the adversities their kids faced last semester and everyone moving to being online for classes,” head coach Paul Marco said. “I am thrilled with the GPA the guys were able to achieve last year both collectively and individually. The challenge now is to really stay focused and continue their great achievements during this new normal.”
This marks the ninth consecutive season that the men’s soccer program has earned the USC’s team academic award.
