Baseball trio earns all-conference honors

Sophomore pitcher Thomas Babalis and senior second baseman Alex Baratta earned America East All-Conference honors in 2021, the conference announced on Wednesday. In addition, sophomore pitcher Jack Collins was named to the All-Academic Baseball Team.

Babalis was selected to the first team, Baratta earned second team honors and Collins earned academic laurels for the second straight season.

The left-handed Babalis was chosen as an all-star for the second time in as many seasons. He followed up his stellar 2019 collegiate debut with another strong season, this time as the team’s number one starter. Babalis made 10 starts, won four games and held down the third-best earned run average in the conference (2.86). He also ranked second in the league and 14th in the NCAA in complete games (4). Batters hit just .207 off him and his 9.85 strikeouts per game (62K in 56.2 IP) ranked fourth in the America East. During a four-game stretch in May, Babalis strung together 18 straight scoreless innings - the second-longest streak in program history. Previously, he was the 2019 America East Rookie of the Year, second team all-conference and All-Rookie selection.

Men’s basketball completes recruiting class

Binghamton men’s basketball has bolstered its roster with the addition of two recruits - sophomore guard John McGriff (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara/St. John’s University) and junior forward Taveion White (Prosper, Texas/Prosper/Clarendon College).

McGriff, a 6-foot, 185-pound guard, comes to Binghamton from BIG EAST member St. John’s, where he played in 18 games in 2020-21. The Red Storm went 16-11 and reached the BIG EAST quarterfinals as the No. 4 seed. McGriff played a season-high 14 minutes in the regular-season finale against Seton Hall, draining a 3-pointer and adding two steals in a 10-point Red Storm win. Earlier in the season, he chipped in five points in an 89-66 win over fellow America East member Stony Brook. He totaled 12 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists during the season - his first collegiate campaign after redshirting the 2019-20 season while recovering from an injury.

White is a 6-foot-8, 220-pound junior who played for Clarendon College (Texas) last season. The Prospect, Dallas native averaged 8.7 rebounds and shot 60 percent from the field in 23 games for the Bulldogs, who compete in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. White spent his freshman season at Horizon League member Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). He played in 21 games and tallied 20 points and 34 rebounds in nearly eight minutes per game. White’s top outing was a seven-point showing on 3-for-3 shooting against Cleveland State. He also pulled down nine rebounds in 26 minutes against Milwaukee.
