Binghamton School of Pharmacy in top 15 for earning residency interviews
Tony Guerra, a host of the Pharmacy Residency Podcast on the Pharmacy Podcast Network, ranked the Binghamton University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in the top 15 (specifically #14) for schools whose residency applicants get interviews.
With more than 8,200 followers of his podcast, and more than 36,300 followers on his YouTube channel, Guerra’s top 15 list got some notice.
“It started gaining attention on Twitter in the pharmacy education space,” said Wesley Kufel, clinical associate professor of pharmacy practice at Binghamton. “There was a lot of discussion about how these numbers were calculated, and Guerra did a good job of explaining it in his podcast.
“We’re making more of a name for ourselves and more of an impact on the national level,” added Kufel.
“I work with other faculty to help students prepare for the application and interview process, how to request letters of recommendation and how to write a letter of intent,” Kufel said.
“We also work with the students on how to engage with programs at meetings and residency showcases,” he explained. The month of October is when a great deal of the application preparation takes place, with early January as the deadline for applications. “This ranking helps to show that we’re preparing our students well in how to submit a successful application and all the components that are within that application to be offered an interview by these programs,” Kufel said. “This is another metric for our students to look at.”
About 25 to 30 SOPPS students are expected to apply, Kufel estimated, based on the number attending residency sessions.
