Health and Wellness Studies Adjunct Lecturer John Fletcher ’92 from Binghamton University’s Decker School of Nursing was selected to receive a Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching for the 2016-17 academic year. Fletcher has taught physical fitness, martial arts, self-defense and wellness courses at Binghamton since 1993. He holds a second-degree black belt in the Korean martial art of taekwondo.

Fletcher strives to instill a love of physical fitness and well-being in his students and has been credited by many for having had a tremendous impact on their lives. His classes are always full and in high demand. Filled with energy and vibrancy, Fletcher is an enthusiastic, disciplined teacher and mentor who inspires his students and uses a culture of respect to help them succeed.

“The cornerstone of my teaching philosophy is based on sound principles of respect and discipline,” Fletcher says. “As a martial arts and fitness instructor, the structured approach I employ encourages students to set and reach goals far beyond their own expectations. Virtues such as courage, determination, perseverance and resilience are designed outcomes. I am strict, but fair.”

In addition to teaching, Fletcher is a faculty fellow for the University’s Newing College residential community and the internship supervisor for Binghamton’s Community Taekwondo program at Glenwood Elementary School in Vestal.
