Jeremy Toulon ’12, MSW ’14 reported for his first day as the newly appointed director of student transition and success (STS) on Thursday, Oct. 12, the day before Homecoming Weekend. The timing was perfect — it was a homecoming for Toulon as well. He graduated from Binghamton in 2012 and attained his master’s degree in social work (MSW) from the University in 2014. He started his professional career as a STEM academic counselor in the Binghamton Student Success Services office. Now, nearly a decade later, he has returned to his alma mater.

“The way this fell into place, it was just a perfect situation,” said Toulon. “To graduate from Binghamton, gain all the necessary skills to become a successful practitioner and an effective leader and then be able to return to the environment that molded me into who I am — it seemed too good to be true. Being a New York native and an alumnus and being able to come back to guide this department that provides such important support for students is a dream becoming reality.”

Toulon graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Afro-American/African Studies and stayed at the University to attain his MSW from the College of Community and Public Affairs (CCPA) in 2014. After graduation, Toulon remained a Bearcat, joining Student Support Services as a STEM academic counselor and providing academic advising and career guidance to low-income and first-generation students. Toulon has worked for a number of non-profit organizations as well as higher education institutions, including Rutgers University and University of Pennsylvania. Most recently, Toulon served as a senior consultant for the National Institute of Student Success in Atlanta, Ga., before coming home to Binghamton as the director of student transition and success (STS).

“[Toulon’s] expertise consulting for multiple higher education institutions on student success initiatives and the positive relationships that he already has across campus make him a perfect candidate for this position,” said Assistant Vice President for Student Success Kelli Smith. “I also appreciated his approach to supervision which we saw being a great fit for the stellar STS team we’ve built. He also has a strong DEI commitment, and will be able to use his personal experience as a transfer student and staff member here at Binghamton to relate to students. He has a clear passion to ensure all our Binghamton students succeed and I am confident he will help take STS to the next level.”

Toulon is excited to hit the ground running as director of STS, digging in to find and capitalize on opportunities within the University to help expand the impact of the office.

“We have a great suite of services and an incredible team already in place,” said Toulon. “The goal is for STS to become a household name within the University community, to have an impact on every student that passes through the University at some point throughout their academic journey — to serve every student — and I’m looking forward to creating that system.”

Both Toulon and his wife, Christina, graduated from Binghamton, so returning to New York has been a homecoming for his entire family. “We’re excited to come back to the area that we know so well,” said Toulon. “To be closer to family and reconnect with all the people that we’ve grown distant from was a huge benefit.” Moving back to the Binghamton area from Georgia, Toulon added he was excited for the return to New York weather, “I’m excited to experience all four seasons again, and for my kids to see the snow.”
