A week of events will showcase Binghamton’s oldest and largest school

Harpur College Week is back! Explore Binghamton University’s oldest, largest and most diverse school from Nov. 5 through 11, with a series of campus events.
Arts, sciences, social sciences and the humanities fall under Harpur’s aegis, as well as interdisciplinary programs. Harpur College Week is intended to introduce students to the college’s many opportunities and areas of study, along with a good dose of fun.
The festivities are open to the entire campus community and include both Zoom and in-person events. However, events may have attendance limits; students should register through B-Engaged. Here’s the schedule:
Sunday, Nov. 5
- Excel for Data Analytics Crash Course from 1 to 5 p.m. in Library North Room 1302C
Monday, Nov. 6
- Daesha Devon Harris exhibition: Our Souls are Kindred with the Tide from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Rosefsky Gallery, Fine Arts Building Room 259
The Rosefsky Gallery is hosting an exhibition by visiting artist Daesha Devon Harris. Harris’ photographic work explores the notion of “home” as it intersects with both her own and the historical Black American pursuit of full, undefiled citizenship, equality and freedom. Harris is a senior visiting fellow at Skidmore College’s John B. Moore Documentary Studies Collaborative Storyteller’s Institute and was named as one of the Royal Photographic Society’s Hundred Heroines. The gallery is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during Harpur Week.
- Zooming with Harpur alumna Ifeoluwa Shoola, manager at the Partnership for Public Service from 12 to 1 p.m.
When Shoola was a student, she studied integrative neuroscience and Africana studies and had life-changing experiences that brought her to the life she leads today. In her career, she is a manager and facilitator for the Partnership for Public Service, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization based in Washington, D.C., whose mission is to inspire a new generation of civil servants and transform how government works. In service to her Nigerian roots, her passion for developing emerging leaders has led her to partner with Children that Change the World to design and deliver an innovation challenge to high school students in the Ogbomoso community, spotlighting the creative wealth of young Nigerians. She also serves as a board member of SprinNG, an organization building a community of young Nigerians in writing and literature, and has worked to expand its reach and impact.

Wednesday, Nov. 8
- Romance Fest from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in a tent in front of the Library Tower
Meet Romance Languages and Literatures faculty members and enjoy music, games, snacks and prizes.
- Pre-law bus trip to New York City, leaving at 9 a.m. and returning at 11:30 p.m.
Pre-law students are invited to participate in a free chartered bus trip to visit Seton Hall Law School, followed by a Binghamton law alumni and student event in New York City. Students will be bussed back to campus after the conclusion of the event. More details coming soon. Contact ljoggerst@binghamton.edu with questions.
- Major and Minor Advising Fair from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Old Union Hall
Discover your path: Join us for an advising event where you will meet faculty and students from the majors and minors across Harpur College.
- Archaeology Open Lab Hours from 12 to 4 p.m. in Science I Room 203
The Masters of Public Archaeology Program will host an open lab event to showcase the artifacts collected during the 2022 and 2023 Binghamton University summer field school at the Bundy Museum in Binghamton. Come in and learn how we process, catalog, date and analyze the artifacts that we collect on digs to interpret the past. No experience or materials are needed.
- Composition: How to tell a visual story from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building (Room TBD)
Composition is what guides our eyes in a stage picture and helps to drive the narrative, grabbing the audience’s attention. It is the director’s job to create powerful compositional stage pictures to help convey the story. Join us to learn more about stage composition and how it can encourage particular emotions and reactions from your audience.
- Learn about summer course-based research opportunities from 2 to 3 p.m. on Zoom.
Undergraduate research experience makes students competitive for fellowships, graduate school, medical school and more. Learn more about opportunities through Binghamton’s Summer Research Immersion and Fast-Track Research Immersion programs.
- Learn a musical theater dance combo from a Broadway show from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Dance Studio 93A in the Fine Arts Building.
Love musical theater? Come and learn a section of choreography from a real Broadway show. This session will be led by international director and choreographer David Wynen.
- History Pub Trivia from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in University Union West Room 325
Do you know your history? Let History Pub Trivia put your knowledge to the test! There will be pizza and prizes.
- Stage management information session from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building in front of Watters Theater.
Meet with faculty member Olivia O’Brien to learn more about how to get involved in stage management with the Theatre Department. After working as a professional stage manager, company manager and production manager in New York City for 15 years and learning the ropes at venues such as Lincoln Center, BAM, The New Victory Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse and Arena Stage, Olivia joined the Theatre Department to inspire students who are interested in all things backstage. Students will be eligible to enter a raffle for a free ticket to a main-stage production. Registration required. Attendees may arrive at any time within the scheduled session.

Come with questions about the Master of Architecture degree and about graduate work and careers in the fields of architecture and urban planning.

- Sew your own tote bag from 10 a.m. to noon in the Costume Shop, located in Fine Arts Building Room B-41
Learn sewing machine basics! Choose your fabric from a selection, cut your pieces and sew your own reversible tote bag. No previous sewing experience is required. A full two hours is needed to complete this project.
- Ed Wilson: Claiming Black Public Space from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in FA-258
Free and open to the public, this lecture by University of California, Irvine, Professor Bridget Cooks is in conjunction with the Fall 2023 exhibition “Ed Wilson: The Sculptor as Afro-humanist,” through Dec. 9.

Are you thinking about future opportunities in finance or venture capital? Then you need to Zoom into this session and meet with economics alumnus Steven Levy! He will share his journey from Lehman Brothers to Cowen & Company to Young America Capital and now Unorthodox Ventures.
- Breath and relaxation from 1 to 1:45 p.m. in Fine Arts Building Room 91.
Come de-stress from the week with gentle relaxation and breathing exercises that will encourage a sense of ease and well-being in your body, your mind and your spirit. We will be working in socks (or barefoot) and also spend some time lying on the floor. Please dress in comfortable clothes that are easy to move in. Registration is encouraged but not required.
- Free your inner actor! from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Fine Arts Building Room 192, Studio A
Come play theater games, do improvisations, meet other people interested in theater and, most of all, have fun! No experience is necessary – just curiosity and a desire to play. Please dress in comfortable clothes in which you can move easily. Registration is recommended but not required.

Participants can drop into this ongoing workshop and explore light-activated zoetropes, stop-motion animation and projection mapping.
