New EXCELERATE Super Goal: $250 million
Campaign nears end date of June 30, 2024
Binghamton University’s meteoric rise from its start as a small liberal arts college in 1946 to the world-renowned, R1 top-performing research university it is today might be a surprise to some, but not to those who’ve been watching closely.
This is a place that supports innovative teaching and research and gives students opportunities that are hard to match elsewhere. To continue to fuel the University’s rise, the EXCELERATE campaign was announced in April 2022.
“It takes our entire University community joining together to enhance Binghamton and its reputation worldwide as a dynamic, premier academic and research institution,” Campaign Committee Chair Howard D. Unger ’82, LHD ’19, says.
The initial goal of the EXCELERATE campaign for Binghamton was an ambitious $220 million — more than double what was raised in the previous campaign. As EXCELERATE nears its end date of June 30, 2024, and is exceeding expectations, it’s clear that Binghamton supporters want to achieve more. Now, thanks to incredible support from donors around the world, Binghamton is speeding forward, aiming to raise a quarter of a billion dollars.
Speed and excellence
Donor gifts to the EXCELERATE campaign are already making a big difference in the student experience:
• $28 million raised so far is being invested in faculty, including to establish endowed positions that make Binghamton more competitive, seed grants for pioneering research and additional support for programs that have global impact, such as the Institute for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention (I-GMAP).
• $63.5 million raised to date is funding scholarships and other student aid that amplify Binghamton as a gateway to life-changing opportunities.
• $13 million so far in Binghamton Fund support is making it possible for the University to respond nimbly when unexpected opportunities or emergency needs arise.
• $118.5 million to date is supporting discovery inside and outside the classroom.
“Binghamton delivers a world-class experience built on a vision that top-tier students, no matter their financial circumstances, should have opportunities to make their dreams come true,” President Harvey Stenger says. “Our students are taking in all the possibilities — immersing in creative and scientific research projects even during their first year on campus, drafting new ideas in fabrication and innovation labs, using ultramodern simulators to practice what they’re reading about in textbooks, and more. Gifts to EXCELERATE make that possible.
“In addition, the University’s more than 150,000 alumni are forging connections and making a real difference on campus and around the world. The success of our students and alumni exemplifies the power of a Binghamton education and the impact of our investment in their remarkable talents and potential. It’s so exciting to see the world pay attention to what we’ve known all along — our community is exceptional.”
