Binghamton University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences researchers and students were in the spotlight earlier this month, traveling to Dallas, Tex., for the 2023 American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Annual Meeting.

Four Binghamton researchers and two students either presented their work to colleagues or were honored with awards for their achievements in pharmacy.

Their achievements are as follows:

  • Wes Kufel - ACCP New Clinical Practitioner Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to the practice of clinical pharmacy.

  • Sarah Lynch - Panel presentation of the Women’s Health PRN and Community-Based PRN Focus Session, “Navigating the dynamic landscape of pregnancy termination in America. Termination in America.” “I presented alongside Lorinda Anderson (Oregon State University) and Veronica Vernon (Butler University),” Lynch said. “It was an honor to be selected to present this topic at this conference; it’s a topic I feel passionate about, and an area where we have seen a lot of changes which gives us the opportunity to provide some important updates and education.”
  • Sarah Spinler – Platform presentation, “Guidelines Should Only be Based on RCTs: Pro. Comparing Apples and Oranges: What to do When Guidelines Don’t Match.” “It was great to see so many Binghamton faculty participating in this professional meeting,” she said. “Many hold leadership positions within the organization and an in-person meeting is a great professional networking opportunity.”

  • Zoey Zagoria (fourth-year PharmD student) - Infectious Disease PRN Distinguished Trainee Award with travel scholarship and Platform & poster presentation, “Slowing the Beat: Evaluation of remdesivir associated bradycardia. “Being recognized in such a way felt surreal, and it wasn’t until I received an outpouring of support from my professors and peers that it truly hit me how much of an accomplishment it is,” Zagoria said
  • Jacob Govel (third-year PharmD student) - Infectious Disease PRN Distinguished Trainee Award with travel scholarship and Platform & poster presentation, “Evaluation of shorter versus longer antifungal treatment durations for candida urinary tract infections.” “The ACCP Annual Meeting in Dallas was an amazing conference and provided valuable experience for my professional development,” Govel said. “Presenting at a national conference is something that I have not had the opportunity to do before, and was a very rewarding experience that allowed me to showcase my research, better my presentation skills, and form important connections with clinical pharmacists. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to attend ACCP Annual Meeting to present my work and represent Binghamton University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.”

“It was a humbling and proud moment as a faculty member to see two of my research mentees, Jacob Govel (P3) and Zoey Zagoria (P4), receive the 2023 American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Infectious Diseases Practice and Research Network (ID PRN) Distinguished Trainee Awards,” Kufel said. “Both students presented research that we worked together on as part of their summer research internships as both a research poster at the Scientific Poster Session and as a platform presentation at the ID PRN Business Meeting at the ACCP Annual Meeting. Jacob’s research was titled, ’Evaluation of Shorter Versus Longer Antifungal Treatment Durations for Candida Urinary Tract Infections’ and Zoey’s research was titled, ’Slowing the Beat: Evaluation of Remdesivir-Associated Bradycardia.’ Both students knocked both of these presentations out of the park! I had multiple ID pharmacists come up to me stating how impressed they were with their professionalism, delivery, and research findings as pharmacy students. They did an excellent job!”

  • Wes Kufel, Mohammad Ali, Sarah Spinler - Poster presentation, “Evaluation of a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Capstone Research Project Experience.”
