Explanation of Costs
Food and Housing Costs
Costs vary for housing and meal plans according to selection. The exchange program covers the cost of housing in a standard double room (non-break housing) in the residential colleges. A student may choo more expensive housing option (such as break housing in the residential colleges, a room in the Mountainview Community, or a room in an apartment community such as Hillside or Susquehanna Communities) but must pay the additional costs. The estimate above is the difference between what is covered by the exchange and the minimum cost of a double room in break housing (Mohawk Hall). Meal plans are not required for students who are housed in Susquehanna or Hillside Communities, prices listefor a standard (level C) meal plan for the 2020-2021 academic year plus 3% to account for the potential rates rising.
Students who are 22 years old or older may not live in the residential colleges. They
may
live in either the Hillside or Susquehanna Communities, or off campus. Information
on off campus housing can be located on the Off Campus College (OCC) website. Please note that the residential colleges, except specifically designated break housing
areas, close during official university breaks and vacation periods. Students not
assigned to break housing (or the Hillside and Susquehanna Communities) are obligated
to find alternative housing during these periods. For this reason, Residential Life
staff have instructed us that exchange students should select break housing. On-campus
room and board options and costs are explained on the Residential Life and Dining Services websites.
Many students opt to travel on weekendsand breaks. The cost of travel and alternative housing during breaks is not factored into this estimate of costs and should be considered by the student when determining their budget for personal expenses.
Health Insurance
The SUNY health insurance fee was $149.69 per month for 2020-2021. Costs are estimated to increase approximately 5% for 2021-2022, but the exact costs won't be known until summer of 2021. Dates of coverage are 8/15-1/14 for the fall semester, and 1/15-8/14 for the spring/summer semester.
Fees
Fees covered by the exchange program include the regular semester billable fees. Some courses have a laboratory, equipment or supplies fee, which is the responsibility of the student. The New Student Fee is a one-time charge applied to every student and will be charged to your student account bill. It covers the cost of the mandatory orientation. The International Student Fee is charged to each international student each semester and covers the cost of administering the SEVIS immigration requirements at Binghamton.
Orientation
Incoming exchange students are required to attend the International Student and Beginning Orientations, held by the office of International Student & Scholar Services and Student Affairs. The new student fee is $220 for all incoming undergraduate exchange students, and this includes the Welcome Dinner on the first day of orientation.
