Women’s basketball picked third in America East preseason poll

The America East has released its preseason women’s basketball poll and the Bearcats have been chosen to finish third out of nine teams this season. The third-place selection ties the program’s highest preseason ranking.

Finishing ahead of Binghamton were New Hampshire and Albany respectively. The Wildcats received all eight first-place votes while the Great Danes had the final vote. The voting was done by the nine conference head coaches, none of whom were allowed to choose their own team.

Rounding out places four through nine were Hartford, UMBC, Maine, Vermont, Stony Brook and UMass Lowell respectively.

Binghamton has made steady progress in the three seasons since Linda Cimino has been the head coach. After placing last in 2015, the Bearcats finished in a three-way tie for third place the following season and were fifth last year. In 2016, Binghamton advanced to the America East semifinals for the first time since 2012.

The Bearcats have been picked to finish third three previous times during their 16 previous seasons in the America East Conference. Those instances came in 2007, 2009 and 2010 preseason polls.

Binghamton opens up its 2017 campaign at Army on Nov. 10.

Women’s soccer wins share of America East regular season title

Freshman back Erin Theiller volleyed home a corner kick rebound 3:56 into overtime to give Binghamton women’s soccer (11-3-4, 5-2-1 America East) a riveting 3-2 win over Hartford Sunday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The win gave BU a share of the America East regular season title (with New Hampshire) - the program’s first since 2004 - and the No. 2 seed for the upcoming conference tournament.

In a wild game that featured five goals, a saved penalty kick and loads of drama, Theiller picked a great time to notch her first collegiate goal. Redshirt forward Kayla Saager took a long pass down the left side and deftly dribbled endline before touching the ball off a Hawks’ defender for the corner kick. Saager then curled her corner high into the box and just off the outstretched hands of Hartford keeper Maia Perez. The ball bounced to Theiller, who calmly sent her left-footed volley into the back of the net for the game-winner. Saager’s assist was her seventh of the season. She ranks 10th in the nation in points (29).

Women’s basketball season preview

For the first three years under head coach Linda Cimino, the Binghamton women’s basketball program featured a young team gaining experience on the court and improving in the America East standings. The potential was evident, as four players earned America East All-Rookie honors – the highest total of any conference team during that stretch.

Heading into the 2017-18 campaign, however, the setting is quite different. Binghamton is now a talented veteran team, anchored by a pair of returning all-conference players in senior guard Imani Watkins and senior center Alyssa James. They are two of the Bearcats’ four returning starters from last year.

Binghamton’s arrival as a top team in the America East was firmly acknowledged in the America East preseason voting. The Bearcats were the only team with two all-conference selections (Watkins and James) and received its highest ranking (third out of nine teams) since 2010.

Men’s basketball season preview

Binghamton men’s basketball heads into the 2017-18 season with as many weapons and as much optimism as they’ve had during head coach Tommy Dempsey’s six-year tenure. With all five starters back and nine of the team’s top 10 scorers from a year ago, the Bearcats are eager to turn the corner in conference play and battle for a home playoff game (top-four seed).

Paramount to the team’s fortunes will be the tandem health of leaders Willie Rodriguez and J.C. Show. The pair were set to form a dangerous inside-outside combination last year before each suffered an injury that allowed them to start just one game together on the floor.

“To go through 32 games and have J.C. and Willie play one game together was frustrating,” Dempsey said. “That had a lot to do with us not being as successful as we wanted last season.”

Rodriguez was slowed by a leg injury in the early season but did enough to climb over the 1,000-point plateau (1,105 pts.). He sharpened up by late February and tallied 46 points in his final two outings, including a 20-point, 14-rebound showing against Stony Brook in the America East quarterfinals.

Wrestling season preview

The Binghamton wrestling team enters the 2017-18 season with something different than they’ve had in past seasons. In addition to having quality talent at the helm with their potential starters, they also have quality depth at the ten weight classes. An effort that has taken head coach Matt Dernlan his five-year tenure, the fruits of the Bearcats wrestling program are finally coming to fruition.

“It’s a really good problem to have,” Dernlan said. “We finally have the depth where we have to sit back as a coaching staff and make some really tough decisions regarding who we’re going to be putting out on the mat. There will be a handful of weights where we’re going to need to utilize the first month or two of competition to see who galvanizes themselves and steps up to the role they need to play.”

In 2016-17, the Bearcats made a huge mark on the program as they had their most successful season to date. They had eight place finishers at the EIWA Championships, with 66 total team points, taking eighth place out of 16 teams. A record setting performance in all three categories. But competing in a prestigious conference with a lot of parity, the sights for this season are set much higher.

Baseball releases spring schedule

Coming off back-to-back America East regular season championships, Binghamton baseball has released its 2018 schedule. The Bearcats, who have won a combined 10 regular season and tournament crowns in the last 11 years, start their spring with a three-game set at Northwestern State University in Louisiana on Feb. 16-18.

“Every year the goal is to put together a schedule filled with early-season and mid-week challenges in hopes that those games help prepare us as a program for the rigorous demands of the America East Conference,” 26-year head coach Tim Sinicki said. “I most certainly believe we’ve accomplished that with the 2018 schedule and are excited to get to Natchitoches, Louisiana, for the season opener.”

Before Binghamton begins conference play in mid-March, the team will play four series’, the last three of which will be in the state of Virginia. The team plays its first 22 games on the road before its home opener April 3 vs. Bucknell. Over the last two seasons, BU has gone 30-5 at home - a win percentage (.857) topped only by Louisville (.909) across the nation. Last season the Bearcats went 30-13 (.698), the 15th-highest win percentage in the country.

Wrestling hosts No. 1 Penn State

The Binghamton wrestling team is back in action this Friday night, November 17th, as they get ready to host No. 1 Penn State. The showcase match, presented by NBT Bank and HH&K will take place at 7 p.m. in the Events Center and will be broadcast on ESPN3. This is the first time in Binghamton athletics history that the school has hosted a defending national champion in any sport.

“This is a premiere event for our program but it’s also a premiere flagship event for the entire athletic department,” head coach Matt Dernlan said. “I think somebody compared them to UCLA basketball coming to the Events Center. It should be a point of pride for everyone in the athletic department that we’re actually able to attract and bring the number one team and most dominant team in their sport to our home facilities.”

This is just the second time a Binghamton team has faced the reigning national champion and the first time hosting a number one ranked team in the country. It will also be the second time Binghamton wrestling has faced the nation’s top ranked team. The Bearcats wrestled then No. 1 Iowa State back in 2007.

“There’s no better opportunity for the guys to wrestle in a big time environment than in our own Events Center,” Dernlan said.
