Binghamton Research Days set for April 18-22
Binghamton University will celebrate research with a series of events across campus this spring. The seventh-annual Binghamton Research Days, to be held April 18-22, will include panel discussions, a poetry slam and more.
Organizers expect more than 180 student projects to be presented during two campus-wide student poster sessions.
“Many projects are by groups of students from different majors, working with faculty from different departments, showcasing how research topics cut across these organizational units,” says Valerie Imbruce, director of the Undergraduate Research Center and chair of the committee that plans the event.
This year’s theme is Crossing Boundaries, and several events will focus on research that spans multiple disciplines or involves collaboration among several departments. The Transdisciplinary Areas of Excellence, a signature Binghamton initiative now in its fifth year, will be the focus of an April 18 panel and luncheon. A representative from each of the five areas will discuss a current project.
During an April 20 panel discussion, undergraduate researchers will discuss how they got involved in research and how it will shape their future after Binghamton. This panel will give students the chance to talk about how they overcome challenges in research and what motivates them.
“There are intrinsic and extrinsic rewards from doing research,” Imbruce says. “It puts students on career paths but also empowers students to feel they are contributing to the greater good of the world.”
Research Days will also feature the second-annual Art of Science competition, which has drawn several dozen entries from student and faculty researchers. Winners of the contest will be announced during a reception and art exhibit on April 18.
Research Days are sponsored by the Division of Academic Affairs, Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program, Division of Research, Freshman Research Immersion, Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, McNair Scholars Program and the Undergraduate Research Center.
