Background
Fiumera's research program aims to characterize the genetic basis to natural variation in ecologically important traits. He is interested in understanding interactions between different genes and also how these genes interact with the environment to affect phenotypic variation. He uses the model system Drosophila melanogaster to aim to understand the consequences of exposure to environmental toxicants and map the genetic basis to susceptibility to these toxicants. He is also interested in the co-evolutionary processes between males and females as well as the role of sex specific genetic effects. His research may help elucidate the mechanisms affecting evolutionary processes, inform the development of alternative pest management strategies and understand how genetic and environmental interactions affect complex diseases.
