Director’s Message

A message from Yvonne Johnston, associate professor and founding director, Division of Public Health

Our program aims to prepare well-educated, theoretically informed, ethical, culturally competent and skillful public health professionals who can apply their knowledge to solve public health challenges.

Within this program, you will have the opportunity to engage in active learning experiences, providing you with real-world skills to improve lives and contribute to community well-being.

The field of public health encompasses the prevention of disease and the promotion of health by addressing underlying environmental factors and social determinants with the goal of achieving health equity among populations.

The MPH Program at Binghamton University will provide you with immersion experiences in which you gain practical public health know how. You will learn how to develop scientific evidence and translate it into meaningful health improvements for diverse populations and communities. You will develop sound professional judgment and be able to work as a contributing member of an interprofessional team.

As a graduate of our MPH program, you will be prepared to be an effective leader and public health practitioner who possesses the essential knowledge, skills and attitudes for:

  • assessing public health challenges;
  • designing, implementing and evaluating public health programs; and
  • conducting applied research to improve the health and well-being of communities.

Employment opportunities for public health graduates abound in many areas: public health departments at county and state levels, hospitals, home healthcare, primary care, outpatient care centers, long-term care facilities, health and human service agencies, community health programs, insurance and pharmaceutical companies, and colleges and universities.
