Background

Abagail Breidenstein received her Ph.D. in 2019 from the University of Michigan and continued her postdoctoral work as a researcher for the Paleogenomics and Mummies Studies groups at the Institute of Evolutionary Medicine at the University of Zürich. She has been a lecturer at Binghamton University in the Anthropology Department since 2022. She is also the Associate Director of the Nuri Archaeological Expedition where she currently conducts anthropological and bioarchaeological research at this ancient necropolis in Sudan. Abagail’s research interests include the bioarchaeology of Nubia (ancient Sudan) and other Nile Valley civilizations, the optimization of paleogenomic methodologies applied to materials from African archaeological sites, and the growing role of ancient DNA data in anthropological research projects.
