Mission and Goals
- To educate students at the undergraduate and graduate levels of systems science, industrial engineering and systems engineering,
- To advance the state of scientific and technical knowledge through basic and applied research,
- To provide technical support for the economic development of the state of New York, and
- To provide service to the university, the public, and the professional community.
A Message from the Chair
Welcome to the School of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering at Binghamton University and I thank you for your interest.
We live in a complex society, but in our department, we do our best to simplify. We work across manufacturing, management, service industries, healthcare systems so time at a hospital wait times are shorter, manufacturing facility are efficient and amusement parks are more fun!
Just as there is great variety in the types of technical applications we pursue, there is great variety in our school as well. Diversity and inclusion are very important to our School as we firmly believe that a more diverse and inclusive environment is essential for students, faculty, staff, and society to thrive. Consequently, we make all efforts to foster a community in which individuals feel free to be their authentic selves while pursuing their educational goals. We likewise seek out opportunities to celebrate the achievements of our students, and our social media and stories are a reflection of our community. SSIE is a place where people of all origins can experience academic freedom and pursue their passions in an environment that is supportive of diverse voices. In a sense, SSIE provides an extended family network for many, many students who are often far away from home, and I am proud of the community that has been fostered and continues to thrive here.
At the master's and doctoral levels, we have three programs: one in Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE), the second in Systems Science (SS) and the third in Healthcare Systems Engineering (HSE). Those pursuing master's degrees also have the option to choose a concentration in Health Systems or a Master of Engineering (MEng) degree with a concentration in Industrial Engineering or Systems Engineering. The department offers an accelerated MS degree program – the Executive Master of Science in Health Systems– which is the only one-year program of its kind with focus on improving healthcare, currently offered in Manhattan.
We also offer the 4+1 program for qualified undergraduates, which allows them to complete requirements toward an MS either in SS or ISE. A similar program is in place for an advanced degree from the School of Management.
In terms of research, we are very closely aligned with the Watson Institute for Systems Excellence (WISE). We also work with federal and industry sponsors to conduct innovative industry-based research.
If you like to improve complex systems, you will like it here. If you like cutting-edge research and applications, you will also like it here.
We are continuously improving our programs as we strive to exceed our own mission and goals.
Thank you for your interest and good luck in your educational endeavors.
