Healthcare Systems Engineering Center (HSEC)

The Healthcare Systems Engineering Center (HSEC)

An Organized Research Center (ORC) under the umbrella of the Watson Institute for Systems Excellence (WISE). The Center focuses on broad-based value-driven relationships between academia and the healthcare industry, conducts theoretical and applied research in the broad areas of health systems engineering, operations management, and data science/analytics. Over the years, the Center has helped numerous healthcare facilities improve:

  • Total quality management
  • Scheduling and sequencing
  • Operational control, such as medical records and patient turnaround time in emergency rooms, to name a few.
  • Hospital supply chain management

Research Partners

Most of the Center's projects have been focused on applied research projects with multiple hospital systems, which often focus on the effectiveness and efficiency of patient care and hospital operations. Some of the healthcare systems we have worked with include:

  • The Care Management Organization (CMO)
  • Montefiore Medical Center
  • Christiana Care
  • Cooper Health
  • EwingCole Inc.
  • LiveOnNY
  • Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK)
  • Mount Sinai Medical Center (MSM)
  • Navicent Health
  • United Health Services (UHS)
  • SUNY Downstate Medical Center

Research Projects

Examples of Healthcare Research Projects include a significant amount of studies in outpatient clinic scheduling, capacity planning and utilization, hospital throughput and simulation studies. The research projects that HSEC continues to focus on and plans to expand are:

  1. Process Re-Engineering
  2. Process and Staff Assessment
  3. Lean, Kaizen and Six-Sigma Implementation
  4. System Wide Improvements
  5. Strategic Planning
  6. Integrated Clinical Environments Modeling and Analytics
  7. Digital Human Modeling in Healthcare Delivery
  8. Healthcare Data Analytics
  9. Decision Support Systems
