What do the tutor interns have to say about this internship?
Fiona Wang - Fall '22 Intern"Hi! I am a BIOL tutor intern for the Fall 2022 semester. When I applied for this internship, I had some experience teaching and working with students. However, I was hesitant to apply because I was worried that I didn’t have enough knowledge as I should to tutor someone in a subject. One of the things you learn in this internship from Alicia is that it’s alright if you don’t know something. Although I already had experience tutoring students, this internship gave me a lot of knowledge about tutoring that I think every tutor should know. It also helped me develop skills such as communication, patience, and observation. Even if you don’t plan on doing something related to tutoring in the future, I think that this is a good experience to be a part of. You get to help other students and the class portion of this internship is fun. Alicia is very understanding and open-minded, and she’s a great person to have both teaching you and helping you through this internship." |
Leyao Yang - Fall '22 Intern"Hi everyone! I am a chemistry tutor intern from the fall 2022 semester. Being someone who is quite introverted and didn’t have much confidence in the subject, I was scared to apply to this position at first. However, I’m glad I did because not only has this internship given me valuable experiences in tutoring, but also the development of transferable skills such as communications, management, observations... etc. As someone interested in education, this was a great opportunity to get a glimpse of what the field could be like. Being able to help those that came in during my tutoring sessions gave me a great sense of fulfillment, all while helping me strengthen my knowledge of the subject. I learned a lot about working with different types of people, and Alicia was always around to answer any questions about the internship. Students that come in for tutoring have been so sweet and self-motivated, and class was also a fun bonding time with Alicia and other tutor interns!" |
Michelle Lin - Fall '22 Intern"When I first started as a SSS Tutor Intern, I was a bit nervous about how to communicate with my tutees and how to clearly explain concepts and ideas with them. However, over the past few months of this internship, I have been able to get more comfortable with being able to explain concepts as well as becoming more confident in my abilities to help my tutees. Additionally, the course has taught that it is important to remember that I am not a professor, therefore, I won’t know everything about the subject and that it’s important to not get too worked up about not being able to explain everything about a topic! I have also learned that the job of a tutor is also to act as a guide and resource to help them build better studying habits and to also increase their confidence in their subjects. Overall, I think that through this internship, I have learned about how different people study and this has definitely helped me with my own studying as I have been incorporating many of the different learning styles into my own studying. I have gained more confidence in my abilities as both a student and a tutor. I’ve also gained more skills in critical thinking, active listening, and communication." |
Danielle Chen - Spring '22 Intern"If you’re looking for a fun and interesting internship this upcoming semester, then you should definitely apply to become a tutor intern! Not only are you giving back to the SSS community by helping your fellow peers succeed, but you are also developing your own professional and leadership skills through each session. No two tutoring appointments are alike, which has taught me how to be flexible and continually improve my skills and knowledge. Furthermore, being able to help others is a super rewarding experience, so I highly encourage everyone to apply." |
Qi Tong Wu - Spring '22 Intern"Through my time as a SSS tutor, I have gained many soft skills that can be applied to my future career. I was able to refresh my memory on foundational topics in Biology and also develop better listening and communication skills. I find myself listening and observing more before speaking. Through this internship, I have learned a lot about different perspectives and was able to analyze my own perspective as well. I’m glad that I was able to actively take part in the SSS community and tutor fellow SSS students. This internship was more than just teaching students material. The class taught us how to approach students, the different learning styles of students, and how to give the right feedback. It also taught us how to communicate effectively to students, while keeping in mind of our different diverse backgrounds and the needs of students. This class was definitely not what I expected but I’m glad I took on this opportunity." |
Serena Riera - Spring '22 Intern"As a tutor intern, I have grown to be a better student. I am able to better assess issues I have with course content. The tutoring class has been a great addition to the tutoring experience because I have learned methods to tutor based on circumstances. I enjoy class times and the content is important for being a prepared and professional tutor intern. My tutoring experience has been beneficial to both the students and myself. I am grateful for this tutoring internship." |
Elidenya Pena - Spring '22 Intern"My semester as a tutor taught me many things about the topics I tutored but I also discovered things within myself I thought were one way only to learn that there is actually another way. Every day, tutoring continues to amaze me. I previously recognized that everyone accumulates knowledge at a different rate, but now I understand even more that even the slightest information can assist a student move from knowing nothing to mastering a topic. There's nothing wrong with needing additional time; it's just a matterof assimilating to the material. I've seen students come in knowing what they're talking about but needing some clarification. Tutoring has also validated my own feelings as a student who attended these classes, knowing that others struggle as I did, brings to light that it is not always the students who are the problem, but rather the topic itself. Seeing students learning the topics is a rewarding experience in itself because as tutors we've all been there and understood that the struggle is real. Tutoring has also allowed me to gain confidence in my English speaking skills, before this internship I would always avoid explaining things to people, having these skills I feel more than confident to explain a piece of information I understand." |
Ariana Rodriguez - Spring '22 Intern"During my time as an SSS tutor intern, I have learned a lot about myself but also a lot about my friends and peers. When I started this internship, I had applied because my advisorsand a friend believed in me and thought I could be a good tutor but I didn’t feel the same. However, it quickly became clear to me that I would be provided with the support, information, and training that would be necessary for me to become a good tutor and to feel confident in my tutoring abilities. I have loved how class is a safe place for us to state how we feel about our expertise level, discuss our progress, and bring to light our struggles. It’s not a class where we’re only learning from Alicia, but from each other as well. Whether we’re doing scenarios or tasks, the group is amazing in supporting each other. Something that’s not mentioned in the job description is how you establish a connection or even a deeper connection with your SSS peers. A lot of people I’ve never seen or spoken to are now friends of mine and it has made the experience so much fun for us all. I’ve learned that you don’t necessarily have to be an expert in a field to be a good tutor. Being a good tutor is about having good communication with your tutees to truly understand where they need help and knowing how to use the resources available." |
Briana Akande - Spring '22 Intern"I have developed many interpersonal skills throughout the tutor internship as well as tutor specific strategies that I would carry on in future tutoring positions. This class taught me how to interact with people taking into account their different learning styles and communication techniques. I am now more familiar on being aware of how to approach people. This was definitely a great learning experience, and I would recommend this internship to anyone interested in being a tutor and wanting to further develop their skills." |
Gordon Liang - Spring '22 Intern"Hello! I am a CS and Math tutor intern for Spring 2022. It took me a lot of thought before applying to this internship. Before this, I had never tutored anyone, and I kept thinking about how I wouldn’t be a good tutor. After much thought, I decided to try it out, and I am glad I did. Through this internship, I was able to learn a lot. This internship will teach you how to become a great effective tutor even if you have no experience. The class has definitely helped with my communication skills. This internship is great if you want to help others. I enjoy helping others, and I am glad that this internship allows me to provide assistance to other students. In addition, tutoring others has also allowed me to build on my understanding of the subjects I am tutoring. Moreover, I am always looking forward to tutoring classes each week. Alicia always does her best to make class fun and interesting." |
Angela Win - Spring '22 Intern"This class was very interactive and engaging in comparison to the general lectures that are offered in Binghamton. Much of the class is discussion based and the readings that we do beforehand are very easy and give a lot of information. If you are a person who wants to develop your communication and listening skills, I would recommend this class because becoming a tutor is much more about listening than you’d expect. I have gained a lot of knowledge about what it means to be a tutor as well as what it takes to be a good tutor, far beyond teaching someone. I think that this class gives a different perspective of the teaching side of learning that may not be as well known, and help others to expand their own view on learning. My overall experience with the class was very pleasant and I enjoyed the class as well as interacting with other SSS students in the process." |
Lucy Hu - Spring '22 Intern"This tutoring internship provides you an amazing opportunity that teaches you step by step on how to become a better tutor. There is no experience necessary: you can come in with no experience at tutoring, and walk out with experience tutoring multiple people. There are many misconceptions about this position that are addressed in the class. One of which is that you need to know everything about the subject you are tutoring which is not true. This class breaks down on how to structure a tutoring session, what questions to ask, how to handle different situations, and so much more. You also participate in fun group exercises that challenge your perceptions about tutoring. But above all, you get to meet a supportive professor that guides you and peers going through the same process as you." |
Farah Azam - Spring '22 Intern"As an SSS tutor, I was able to have the amazing opportunity to make an impact on students’ college experience by assisting them in their classes. Through this experience, I was able add onto my leadership skills and develop my communication and problem-solving skills. From the class, I was able to gain more insight on what kind of students I might interact with and different ways to help them. The class helped me reduce my fears of being a tutor and made me feel more prepared and confident when tutoring students. Through tutoring, I was also able review and brush up on my knowledge for certain subjects that were essential to know for my upper level classes and my Admissions Test for grad school. I highly encourage students to become an SSS tutor as you can contribute to the SSS community and obtain valuable skills and knowledge." |
Lynn Bijou - Spring '22 Intern"Being a tutor has allowed me to grow my confidence and social skills. I feel more confident inparticipating in class and group discussions through attending class weekly. Helping tutees hasalso helped me be a better communicator." |
