American Red Cross

American Red Cross certification courses are offered at the East Gym every semester.  Register for any course online (after logging in, navigate to Certifications and then Wellness). Class sizes are limited.

All of our courses offered are in a blended learning format, where there will be online work that must be completed before the start of the class. After you register for a course, you will receive an email with more information on how to complete the online training. These online trainings take between 1–3 hours to complete. Completion of the blended learning online portion is tracked through the Red Cross Learning Center website.

Adult CPR/AED/First Aid Certification

The CPR/AED/Adult First Aid course incorporates the latest science and teaches students to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies such as burns, cuts, scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck, back injuries, heat and cold emergencies and how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies for victims about 12 years and older.

Successful students will receive a certificate for Adult First Aid/CPR/AED valid for two years.

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS)

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) uses a scenario-based approach to develop the critical thinking and problem solving skills that drive better patient outcomes. It is consistent with AHA Guidelines for CPR/ECC, and covers breathing and cardiac emergencies, including CPR, AED, and obstructed airway, for adult, child, and infant patients. 

Successful students will receive a certificate for Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) valid for two years.

First Aid

Learn to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies, such as burns, cuts and scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck and back injuries, and heat and cold emergencies. 

Successful students will receive a certificate for First Aid Certification valid for two years. 

Lifeguard Certification

  • Must be at least 15 years of age by the last day of the course

The Lifeguard Certification course is designed and taught by professionals to help others stay safe, in or around the water. Participants must pass a pre-course swim evaluation. This evaluation consists of a 300 yard continuous swim while demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing, a timed deep-water brick retrieval, and 2 minutes of treading water without the use of arms or hands.

Successful students will receive a certificate for Lifeguard Certification valid for two years. 

Lifeguard Certification Review*

The American Red Cross Lifeguard Review is a class designed to update your skills and renew your current Red Cross Lifeguarding certification valid for another 2 years. 

*Participants must have and bring CPR/AED, Lifeguard, and first aid certification, as well as a breathing mask, to class. Certifications must be current or no more than 30 days expired. If certification is more than 30 days expired, participants must take a full lifeguarding course.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification

  • 5:30 – 10:30 p.m Friday; 8:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
  • $400 (includes manual and certificate)
  • Must be at least 16 years of age by the last day of the course
  • Register (under Certifications)

The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course is designed to teach you the necessary skills needed to teach courses and work with others in the water. Instructor candidates must come to class with some basic swimming skills, as this is not a Learn-to-Swim course. A pre-course skills evaluation will be conducted, which includes an evaluation of all six swimming strokes (front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly), proficiency in treading water for one minute, and ability to maintain position on back for one minute, either by floating or sculling.

Successful students will receive a certificate for Water Safety Instruction certification valid for two years. 

Group Fitness

Campus Recreation offers opportunities to get certified in different fitness formats and earn continuing education credit.
