A collegiate professor, who is traditionally a tenured member of the faculty, leads each residential college or community on Binghamton’s campus. Collegiate professors report jointly to the vice provost for undergraduate education and enrollment and the director of Residential Life, and serve for a renewable term of three years.
Collegiate professors work closely with Residential Life staff in their college/community to create activities and programming that make connections between students’ living and learning experiences. How each collegiate professor accomplishes this goal varies according to that person’s vision for the college/community. However, some broad responsibilities every collegiate professor has are:
- Providing general advising to students in their residential college/community,
- Overseeing area-based and hall-based courses and learning communities,
- Collaborating with the college/community’s assistant director and resident directors to break down barriers between students and faculty,
- Participating in the University’s orientation programs for new/transfer students each summer,
- Assisting in the summer training of resident directors, resident assistants and success coaches,
- Working with students and student leadership groups in their residential college/community,
- Collaborating with other collegiate professors to stimulate and support educational programs (curricular and co-curricular) for all undergraduate students at Binghamton,
- Representing their residential college/community on various University committees, and
- Nominating and coordinating the activities of faculty and student fellows within their residential college/community. (Each residential college/community has a group of faculty and student fellows who serve as resources for its students and take part in its programs.)
Become a Collegiate Professor
The Provost's Office, in collaboration with Residential Life, invites applications from any tenured member of the Binghamton University faculty to fill the position of collegiate professor at Mountainview College.
To apply to become a collegiate professor, submit a statement of interest and curriculum vitae in one pdf document via email to Vice Provost James Pitarresi no later than November 15. Interviews will be scheduled shortly thereafter. Target appointment date start is June, but a January start date is possible.
This initial appointment is for three years and carries a full-year obligation at a salary of 120 percent of your current remuneration. This extra compensation is in recognition of the additional responsibilities for this role during the academic year, plus participation in selected activities during the summer months. It comes with an approximate 50 percent replacement of your current research, service and teaching duties by the duties of a collegiate professor, in a manner to be determined in consultation with your colleagues, chair, dean and the Provost's Office.
