Description: I went to this ant hill when I had to test out the contact mic and it looked pretty much the same. With this microphone it was a lot easier to hear all the activity going on within the hill. I thought it was interesting to see that there weren’t just ants, but other tiny bugs as well. To stick the hydrophone in the ant hill I broke off a branch of a toppled tree and dug a hole. I was afraid I might pierce some ants, but to my surprise I heard lots of ant activity. I was surprised because I only saw one ant on top of the mound and the mound was mostly covered in grass. The mosquitoes and nats were constantly annoying me and I think at one point the recording may have picked up on me trying to kill a mosquito. It was very hard to stay still.
Rec 2: - Time: 11:50 - Length: 5 min
- Device: Hydrophone
- Temperature: ~ 60 degrees
Description: This was about 20 meters from the anthill I recorded in recording 1. There were a lot more ants on this one, I believe they were Allegheny Mountain Ants. The recording I thought was a little better than the previous one. At one time there were 4 ants on the hydrophone itself and one was trying to climb up the cord. It got sunnier and the bugs were still annoying. This time there weren't as many mosquitoes but the nats were annoying. If there are any weird sounds it is probably me shooing away bugs.
Time: 12:00 - Length: 5 min
- Device: Hydrophone
- Temperature: ~ 60 degree
- Trail: Pipeline bridge
Description: I thought this recording was very interesting and nice to hear. I put the hydrophone in two locations. The first location was in a slow and gentle moving part of the stream. The sound this made was soothing. The second location was at a higher velocity of water near the rocks. This made a very interesting sound that reminded me of a xylophone.
Recording 4: Vernal Pool, inside creek
Device: Hydorphone
Length: 5 minutes
Time: 6:17
Description: When I was walking I saw a Buck. I got to the trail by traveling upstream from the bridge. It just rained a few minutes ago the water is very fast and loud. I had to move it down a little because the peak indicator was blinking like crazy. I didn’t know how to get the input down on the tascam. You can hear the bubbles popping adv the flow of water. Update I found the button and I moved it back.
Recording 5:
- Stereo
- 6:25
- Same trail
My phone interfered a little bit with this one as I was typing some notes. I wanted to do a panoramic to see how the sound changed when I moved around. I was surprised by how much the sand absorbed the sound.
Phone interfered a little. Cool to see the change in sound panoramic
Recording 6: Upper Vernal, Stereo
- 6:35
I went upstream where there were a ton of logs because I wanted to see how the logs effect the sound. There seems to be more of an echo in the recording. There are birds and a chipmunk scared me. There seems to be more animal activity in this part.
