Binghamton University will offer its fifth annual summer science program designed to excite students about science, math and engineering.

The Go Green Institute will bring together 55 of the Southern Tier's brightest seventh-graders for an intensive 10-day, hands-on learning experience centered on the theme of a greener living environment. . Go Green will take place this year from July 9-20.

Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds Program, Binghamton University’s Center of Excellence in Small Scale Systems Integration and Packaging (S3IP) and its Center for Autonomous Solar Power (CASP) co-sponsor the program with Broome-Tioga Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES).

Through Go Green, students explore issues of science, math, engineering and psychology as they relate to creating a sustainable living environment. They will experiment in the lab and take field trips to the University’s Nature Preserve and Center of Excellence, working with Binghamton University faculty members and graduate students, as well as faculty from BCC and teachers from local school districts.

Go Green, led by Wayne Jones, interim dean of Harpur College and professor of chemistry, involves a dedicated group of graduate students, middle school science teachers and faculty working closely with the students.

“Each year, Go Green brings together talented middle school students from 30 school districts to work together on projects of sustainability and a greener environment,” said Jones. “It is an exciting experience for faculty as we interact with these students, as well as work with local teachers and businesses. It’s collaborations like these that help us inspire young people, sparking their interest in careers in science and engineering and setting them on a path to be the innovators of tomorrow.”
