BINGHAMTON, NY – Students from Binghamton University’s Summer Youth Musical Theater Workshop will perform Legally Blonde: The Musical at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, and Sunday, August 12, in Watters Theater, located in the Fine Arts Building at Binghamton University.

Legally Blonde is a musical with music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Neil Benjamin and book by Heather Hach, based on the novel by Amanda Brown and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer motion picture. It tells the story of Elle Woods, a sorority girl who enrolls at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend, Warner. She discovers who her knowledge of the law can help others, and successfully defends exercise queen Brooke Wyndham in a murder trial.

The Summer Youth Musical Theater Workshop is for youths, 12-18 years old, who want to participate in a real musical production while learning new skills and developing experience. Two groups perform their own production (two performances each) with their own actors, singers, and chorus. All students have the opportunity to participate in several aspects of the production. Professional artists provide vocal and acting lessons and coaching as related to the musical roles and focuses on individual and group voice training, acting and improvisation classes, movement and dance classes, stagecraft experience, makeup and costumes.

The workshop, founded in 1998, has been attracting the best theater students in the area. Instructed by the talents of Program Director Elaine Tamaru Nicholson, Musical Director Brenda Dawe, Conductor Todd Robinson, Director James Everett Lortz and Costume Designer Jessica Jahn, this workshop is sponsored by Binghamton University’s departments of Music and Continuing Education and the Anderson Center for the Performing Arts.
