BINGHAMTON, NY – Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger, the vice presidents and the director of athletics gave the campus community a review of 2012 activities and initiatives and a look at future plans during the annual State of Binghamton University address on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
Stenger’s priorities in 2012 included NYSUNY 2020, positioning the University for maximum economic impact and kicking off the Road Map strategic planning process. In 2013, Binghamton University must continue to be better and bigger and will use the Road Map process as its guide.
“As good as we are, we need to get better to get bigger, bigger to get better, measure our successes and listen to others,” Stenger said. “We’ll do this by being engaged with all of our communities, expanding our academic and research programs, increasing graduate student enrollment, focusing our resources on areas of strength and increasing our reach outside of New York.”
The vice presidents and director of athletics also put forth plans for the coming year.
Donald Nieman, provost and vice president for academic affairs
Continue enrollment and faculty growth while enhancing the undergraduate experience, increase the University’s strength and reputation in research, increase graduate student enrollment, and study the financial feasibility and academic desirability of creating a pharmacy school
Brian Rose, vice president for student affairs
Develop initiatives to challenge students intellectually outside of class; improve student advising; promote high-quality experiential learning; invest in career development services; provide innovative programs; enhance health education, safety and wellness initiatives; improve parent communications
Bahgat Sammakia, vice president for research
Facilitate growth in graduate enrollment and research, strive toward national designation in signature areas of research, guide planning for state-of-the-art research infrastructure, support undergraduate research, promote diversity in all areas
Marcia Craner, vice president for external affairs
Develop philanthropic leaders, conduct a feasibility study for the next comprehensive gifts campaign, strengthen alumni relations programs, continue reputation-building initiatives through media, social media, the Web and other communications vehicles
Pat Elliott, director of athletics
Continue to recruit and retain quality student-athletes, expand and develop new revenue streams, support University Road Map initiatives
James Van Voorst, vice president for administration
Go live with new business system, move forward with numerous capital construction initiatives (Center of Excellence, Smart-Energy Building, University Union renovations, new Student Wing classrooms, East Campus Housing)
All of these initiatives will move Binghamton University forward, said Stenger. “2012 was a good year, and 2013 will be even better.”
