BINGHAMTON, NY – “Why Monogamy Matters: Research on Love, Sex, and Singles,” will be the topic of the Binghamton University Forum luncheon program on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Lunch will begin at noon, followed by the formal program at 12:30 p.m. at Traditions at the Glen, 4101 Watson Boulevard in Johnson City.

The forum will feature guest speaker Justin Garcia, a graduate of Binghamton University who is currently an Assistant Professor of Gender Studies and research Scientist at the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Since 2010, Garcia has served as a scientific advisor for the international online dating site Match.com. In particular, he has been a collaborator on the annual Singles in America (SIA) study, which is the most comprehensive, ongoing study of single Americans, sponsored by Match.com and based on randomly selected, nationally representative samples (including respondents beyond Match.com and its subsidiaries).

Garcia is currently conducting research into ‘hook-up’ behavior and culture, which includes non-relational or uncommitted sexual encounters, happening especially during the developmental period of emerging adulthood, and typically focusing on college-age students. Other research interests include evolutionary and biocultural models of human behavior, romantic love and intimate relationships, and monogamy. Garcia has been repeatedly approached for commentary on dating and monogamy/infidelity issues and has made media appearances on CNN, MSNBC, CBS, and CTV.
