BINGHAMTON, NY – A group of Binghamton University students will present a check for $10,000 to the UHS School-Based Clinic’s after-school and summer programs at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, in the garden plot of Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School, 9 Ogden Street, Binghamton.

The UHS School-Based Health Care Program is a not-for-profit that works like an in-school doctor’s office to provide physical, dental, and psychological care to children at Binghamton’s Benjamin Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt elementary schools. The program includes after-school and summer programs that build parent-child relationships, while also teaching families about the importance of nutrition and exercise.

Alexandria Hall, Rachel Engle, Timothy Tschurjumov, Lauren Colantino and Jennifer Solomon won a national philanthropy contest by creating a 3-minute video about the UHS School-based Clinic programs. The students are all previous participants in the Philanthropy In Civil Society course taught by professor David Campbell.

The students chose to make a video for the UHS Foundation after becoming familiar with the organization and its work in the 2012 Philanthropy in Civil Society Course, where they designated $3,000 towards the program’s initiatives. In the video submission for this year’s contest, Binghamton University students focused on the degree of need demonstrated by the UHS program and the impact that an additional $10,000 would have in expanding the program. The 3-minute video helped the students showcase their knowledge, values, and decision-making skills while also advocating for a worthy non-profit. The video contest is funded by the Learning by Giving Foundation, which was created in the summer of 2011 through the generosity of Doris Buffett, following the success of the program by the same name through her Sunshine Lady Foundation. The Learning by Giving Foundation funds and promotes experiential philanthropy to encourage the development of future philanthropic leaders.
