Activities to recognize veterans' contributions
Binghamton, NY -- The Binghamton University campus will observe Veterans Day 2013 through a variety of activities, beginning Friday, Nov. 8.
Friday, Nov. 8
Admission to the Binghamton Bearcats basketball doubleheader in the Events Center – the women play Buffalo at 5:30 p.m. and the men play Loyola at 8 p.m. − is free for all veterans, reservists and active duty members of the military with valid ID. Each qualifying veteran will receive up to two free tickets.
Saturday, Nov. 9
The Binghamton University Veterans office, in association with Off Campus College Transport (OCCT) will provide free overflow parking and bus transit to the Returning Warrior 10-Miler race at Otsiningo Park in Binghamton. The bus will load passengers in Lot M (Susquehanna stop) and will travel to Ostiningo Park at 8:15 a.m. and 9 a.m., prior to the 10 a.m. run, and will make runs back to campus at 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m., after the run. The Returning Warrior 10-Miler, sponsored by the Broome County STOP-DWI Program, is dedicated to heightening awareness about service members’ transition from the dangers of war-zone driving to the new risks they face on our public highways, here at home. In addition to the 10-mile race, the event will also feature a 5-mile race and a free children’s race that will be held after the two main races. Sunday, Nov. 10
Admission to the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Wrestling Open beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Events Center is free for all veterans with valid ID. Each qualifying veteran will receive up to two free tickets. The opener is named in honor of Kaloust, a U.S. Navy Seal and former Binghamton wrestler who died in a training accident earlier this year. The Binghamton University ROTC unit will parade the colors and there will be a brief dedication ceremony prior to the start of the opener.
Monday, Nov. 11
On Veterans Day, a morning flag-raising ceremony conducted by the Binghamton ROTC unit, along with the New York State University Police at Binghamton, will begin at 9 a.m. in front of the Couper Administration Building. Student Deanna Feuerbach will sing the National Anthem and President Harvey Stenger will make brief remarks. The flag will be lowered at 5 p.m. as student trumpet player Jason Boniello plays taps.
There will be a Veterans Day panel discussion, keynote address and luncheon at 12:15 p.m. in the Mandela Room of the University Union. There will be a discussion on the modern military and the War on Terror, followed by a keynote address by Lt. Col. David Fosdick, who will discuss the role of the modern military in today’s society. This event is open to the campus and community, but the luncheon is limited to the first 150 people.
These events are co-sponsored by the Binghamton University Veterans Services Office, Athletics Department, Office of the President, Music Department, Division of Student Affairs, New York State Police at Binghamton University and U.S. Army ROTC at Binghamton University.
