BINGHAMTON, NY – The SBDC at Binghamton University has helped secure an additional $100,000 in NY Rising funding, which brings the total of local NY Rising Small Business Grant awards to $300,000. This grant is available for both non-profit and profit small businesses. 

"The Tioga County Open Door Mission is an excellent recipient of this grant. Not only do they provide essential assistance and services to Tioga County, but also they have uncompensated losses that were created by the severe storms of 2011," said Jocelyn Thornton, a small business advisor with the SBDC. "The Small Business Development Center at Binghamton University was happy to provide the assistance needed to process and submit this grant application. To be eligible for funding, currently operating businesses must have experienced direct damage and/or economic hardships as a result of one of these storms."

"Small Businesses that were damaged by either Hurricane Irene or Tropical Storm Lee should contact Binghamton University's Small Business Development Center to determine if they qualify for the NY Rising Small Business Recovery Grant," said Rochelle Layman, the program’s director. "The SBDC is currently working with approximately 85 local small businesses to assist with their grant applications. It is essential that the small businesses that were damaged by the storm contact us so we can register them in the program."

The SBDC at Binghamton University will host the NY Small Business Recovery Grant Program at 10 a.m. Monday, May 19, at the SBDC office at 222 Water St., Binghamton, N.Y. The presentation will give participants a chance to discuss the grant program, the eligibility requirements and the application process.

The funding comes from New York’s Small Business Storm Recovery Program, which is part of the New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program. The New York Rising initiative was launched last year by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and funded by federal recovery dollars. It is designed to empower communities that suffered significant damage in recent storms and assist those communities as they build back following extensive flood damage.
