BINGHAMTON, NY – Binghamton University’s Confucius Institute of Chinese Opera will host "Sounds of China," featuring students entering grades 6-12, who will present their newfound Chinese language and Beijing opera skills. Free and open to the public, this event will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, in the Anderson Center Chamber Hall, on campus.
The "Sounds of China" performance is an end-cap to a three-week, Chinese language/performing arts summer day-camp program that began July 28.
Through this program, students were able to develop the fundamentals needed to converse in basic Chinese with teachers and classmates, as well as experience and learn for themselves the many aspects of Beijing Opera, including its style of stage combat, costumes, character types, singing, distinctive face-painting style, history and movements.
This program is sponsored by STARTALK, a language learning program established by the U.S. government in 2006 to expand national capacity in critical languages. For more information, contact Laura Scott at lscott@binghamton.edu.
