BINGHAMTON, NY - Binghamton University is partnering with Universities Allied for Essential Medicines and the Global Health Impact Project to host the 2015 Human Rights and Global Health Conference from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Friday, April 17, in Old Union Hall, on campus. The event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be served.

The conference will feature a panel of world-renowned experts on global health to discuss poverty, access to essential medicines and ways to protect the human right to health for all.

During the conference Nicole Hassoun, associate professor of philosophy at Binghamton University will discuss the Global Health Impact Project (GHI). The GHI measures the impact that pharmaceutical companies’ drugs have on the world’s most infectious diseases: tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and malaria. Hassoun launched the GHI in January and continues its mission at Binghamton University with the help of undergraduate and graduate researchers. The GHI has garnered worldwide media attention and has been featured in publications like the Wall Street Journal and Capital New York.

"People are dying because they can’t access medication, so we need to know where we’re having an impact and where we need to have an impact still," said Hassoun.

Other panelists include members from Doctors Without Borders, John Hopkins’ Bloomberg School of Public Health, Georgetown University, the pharmaceutical industry and many others.
