BINGHAMTON, NY - The SUNY Business and Education Cooperative of the Southern Tier (SUNY BEST) will host "Green Energy in the Southern Tier" at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, in room 220 of the Binghamton University Downtown Center, 67 Washington St., Binghamton. This presentation is free and open to the public.

The Southern Tier region has positioned itself as a smart-energy leader in New York state. With looming global climate changes, as well as new federal and state initiatives to alter the energy creation and conservation landscape, many innovative smart-energy initiatives are emerging. This event highlights how companies and communities have developed solid alternative energy strategies, and how going green through strong efficiency and conservation programs makes excellent business sense.

Herbert Dwyer, president of ASI Energy, will discuss combined heat and power (CHP) systems, along with highlights on micro-combined heat and power (mCHP) systems, and their impact on energy security, savings, sustainability and greenhouse gas reductions. Ed Arzouian, compliance and special projects coordinator at Bates Troy Inc., will discuss Bates Troy’s various general "green" initiatives and specific resource management methodology. He will look at some of the success and some of the challenges the company has faced, things that worked and things that did not. Those specific energy and resource-saving technologies, which are currently in use, will be presented. Michael Straight, NYSERDA Southern Tier representative, will describe assistance available to Southern Tier businesses interested in CHP, and much more.

SUNY BEST, a community development and outreach enterprise of Binghamton University’s Center for Innovative and Continuing Education, represents a volunteer group comprised of senior staff members from key economic and educational institutions in the Southern Tier. The group works to forge strong alliances, strengthen industry specific needs, and provide information and outreach for business.
