Support the Human Rights Institute

The Human Rights Institute was launched to advance research and public policy initiatives and to develop high-impact student engagement in human rights.

With faculty from over 10 departments and programs, we have formed research working groups that are studying topics such as labor and sex trafficking, refugees and migration, technology and human rights, and the relationship between religion and human rights. Other affiliates are engaged in field research in our local community, across the country, and around the world (Pakistan, Guatemala and Greece), addressing such problems as access to healthcare and post-conflict rights.

Creating opportunities for students to engage directly in human rights research and practice is central to our mission. We have the only human rights minor within the SUNY system as well as a Freshman Research Immersion program and The Source Project in Human Rights for incoming students who have a passion for social justice-based inquiry, research and exchange.

As we continue to grow, we are eager to share our work with alumni and learn from those who have transformed their Binghamton education into human rights careers.

We are grateful for your assistance in strengthening our program, and gifts of any size are appreciated. Our funding priorities (with named funding opportunities) include:

  • Annual prizes to recognize undergraduate, graduate and faculty research excellence
  • Undergraduate and graduate summer research awards in human rights
  • A postdoctoral appointment or visiting scholar in international law and human rights and/or the history of human rights
  • A human rights practitioner lecture series
  • Faculty fellows program
