Summit on Climate Change and Black Communities

The Ellyn Uram Kaschak Institute for Social Justice for Women and Girls is participating in an important conference organized by the Payne Center for Social Justice/Thurgood Marshall College Fund on climate change and its impact on Black communities. With a focus on science, systemic inequalities and solutions, the Kaschak Institute is pleased to co-sponsor the event along with the Harriet Tubman Center for Freedom and Equity and Provost Donald Hall.

Summit on Climate Change and Black Communities

The Summit seeks to convene leaders, policymakers, academics, and advocates to construct a new front in the movement to address the climate crisis in the United States. The Summit will address the racialized impacts of climate change and highlight how Black American communities are key agents of change in the fight for a sustainable future.

The objectives of this initiative are to:

  • Consolidate and highlight knowledge from the African-American community about climate change, including its disparate and racialized impacts in the U.S.
  • Develop a Comprehensive Policy Agenda (CPA) and concrete calls to action related to climate change and African-American communities
  • Raise public awareness about the racialized impacts of climate change and center Black voices in the environmental movement
  • Facilitate cross-sector collaboration and direct action to address the impact of climate change on Black communities
  • Present this policy agenda to an audience of policymakers at the Summit
  • Secure commitments from lawmakers, corporate partners and civil sector organizations related to race and climate change, to be announced at the Summit

Join us Tuesday, June 4 for an exciting day of thought-provoking discussion and inspiration with more than 20 educators, researchers, policy makers, practitioners and entrepreneurs.

We are thrilled to announce that a number of community partners and alumni are participating in the event.
