Introduction
Over a year ago, the Libraries undertook a process to develop a Strategic Plan. The Strategic Planning Process, which we called Deconstructing Our Now, Designing Our Future (DONDOF), involved a collective effort of Binghamton University Libraries employees, collecting input from students, staff, faculty and administration across campus. The purpose of this process was to create a document which will help guide our future activities for the next few years. The Strategic Plan redefines our organization's Mission, Vision, and Values and identifies three goals and specific strategies to achieve those goals over the next 5 years.
Mission
The Libraries provide our University community with high-quality collections, services and spaces for research and academic achievement.
Vision
The Libraries serve as the premier University destination that advances research, learning and academic growth for all.
Values
In service to Binghamton University: The Libraries are part of a larger institution, and in service to the University mission. Our goals and strategies are aligned with the University in our support of academic teaching, learning, research and in the preservation and development of collections.
Investment in organizational culture: The Libraries recognize the importance of investing in a culture where we work collaboratively, regardless of functional area or position. We want the Libraries to be a place where people enjoy working and where we respect each other’s roles as members of one team. This means being proactive about how we approach communication, collaboration, IDEA, accountability and transparency.
Intentional about IDEA: The Libraries cultivate an environment of inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility (IDEA) to validate the lived experience of those we work with and serve. Our definitions are as follows:
- Inclusion: The act of creating environments in which any individual or group can be and is welcomed, represented, present, respected, supported and valued to fully participate.
- Diversity: Representation in staffing, content, materials, environments, aesthetics, perspectives, methods and knowledge.
- Equity: Equitable access to opportunities, outcomes and treatment sustained through systems and structures; absence of marginalization; recognizes the rights of all, both internal and external to the Libraries.
- Accessibility: All patrons can engage in the services, offerings and opportunities in all formats including digital, physical and in-person. All Libraries’ employees have assured a working environment that dismantles barriers to access and provides creative, reasonable accommodations.
Three Goals
This plan includes three interrelated goals for 2022-2027, each with strategies to help achieve them, as outlined on the following pages.
These goals work together to strengthen our core library resources, center the Binghamton University mission in our work and enhance our organizational effectiveness, all of which are critical to this plan’s success.
