Departments

Administration 

Binghamton University Libraries is administered by the Dean of Libraries with the Libraries' Executive Committee.  The Libraries Administrative Office oversees budget, building administration, gifts and human resources.

Collections 

Collections oversees the development and maintenance of the Libraries’ unique and diverse collection in print and electronically. Subject librarians are responsible for selecting materials in the subject areas.  

Digital Initiatives and Resource Discovery

Digital Initiatives and Resource Discovery provides leadership, direction, and innovation in discovery and use of the Libraries’ collection and online resources. The staff oversees web design and development of digital collections, including oral histories. The department also is responsible for the Libraries’ digital scholarship initiative, institutional repository (the ORB @ Binghamton), and digital preservation system.  

Library Technology 

Library Technology provides high quality, innovative information technology solutions. The department supports and maintains public and staff computers, Linux and Microsoft Windows servers, the integrated library system (Alma), and our discovery platform (Primo). The department also provides digital preservation services for the Binghamton community, oversees the library web services, and builds custom web and technical applications for a variety of library-wide initiatives.

Office of IDEA

The purpose of the Binghamton University Libraries’ Office of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) is to ensure all people feel a sense of belonging to safely present their authentic selves. This responsibility includes and supports Libraries’ employees and patrons through continuous individual and organizational efforts geared toward learning, development and assessment. Preservation 

Preservation functions as an integral part of collection development and works closely with other departments to maintain the collections in usable condition for the long term.  

Reader Services and Resource Sharing - Bartle Library

Reader Services staff and student workers oversee circulation, course reserves, and graduate study carrels. Resource sharing staff members manage our interlibrary loan and document delivery services. Circulation staff are responsible for opening/closing Bartle Library and assist with building maintenance. CMF and Stacks staff prepare and transport material for courier service as well as organize and reshelve material.

Research and Instructional Services

Research and Instructional Services provides general library and information literacy instruction, course-specific instruction, in-depth research consultations and research assistance via our Research Help service. These services assist the University community in identifying and accessing an extensive range of print and electronic resources for teaching, learning and research. 

Science Library

Science Library staff and student workers oversee circulation, stack maintenance, and resource sharing at the branch library on the main campus. Staff are responsible for opening/closing and assist with building maintenance. 

Special Collections and University Archives

Special Collections and University Archives collects, organizes, interprets, preserves and provides access to unique and rare materials that enhance and encourage research and learning locally and worldwide. 

Scholarly Communications

The Libraries’ Scholarly Communications Program facilitates discussion of emerging publication and scholarship models to support campus faculty, staff and student publishing and research as well as archiving of scholarly works. Services include guidance on copyright, Open Access, and data management. 

Technical Services 

Technical Services is vital to meeting the needs of an evolving research and teaching institution, where curricular and research activities are dependent upon access to new scholarly publishing. The department units are Acquisitions, Cataloging, and Book Preparation and Binding. These units acquire and catalog materials for the collection in various formats with the goal of making them easily accessible to our users.  

UDC Library

University Downtown Library staff and student workers oversee circulation, stack maintenance, and resource sharing at the branch library in the University Downtown Center (UDC).
