The Skills Lab with the Department of Pharmacy Practice serves as the bridge between classroom learning and clinical rotations in the entry-level pharmacy technician program microcredential. Skills Lab simulation activities are designed to immerse learners in realistic, clinical situations that pharmacy technicians will encounter in the field. By providing opportunities to perform pharmaceutical tasks in a safe and supportive environment, Skills Lab simulations increase learner mastery of clinical concepts and strengthen the communication skills necessary to provide quality patient care.
The state-of-the-art simulation spaces include:
- A 48-station compounding lab with laminar flow hoods, bio-safety cabinets, and electronic scales.
- A community pharmacy equipped with specialized software, Kirby Lester devices for tablet counting, label printers, and automated electronic dispensers to facilitate fulfillment of high-frequency medications. Internal phone lines allow for scenarios in which learners may call providers to verify medication requests.
- The hospital pharmacy simulation space provides learners with a realistic setting in which to perform tasks such as processing provider orders for patient medications. The hospital pharmacy includes a simulated 797 clean room in which learners practice sterile compounding methods such as IV production in one of four laminar flow workstations. A separate ante-room serves as a location for garbing personal protective equipment before entering the clean room environment.
- A home care space with a sofa and seating for 15.
