There are several pre-health scholarships available to current juniors who will be seniors in the next academic year and to current sophomores who will be a junior in the next academic year. You may apply to more than one scholarship, however, please read the criteria for each scholarship to be sure you are eligible before submitting an application. Scholarships for current juniors (who will be seniors in the next academic year):
Dr. Thomas C. '61 and Beverly Adler Brown '78 Scholarship:
Awarded to a full-time senior in Harpur College planning to apply to one of the following health professions (medicine, dentistry, optometry, podiatry, physical therapy, occupational therapy or physician's assistant) for fall admission immediately after graduation. Eligibility: You must have a strong academic record and demonstrated financial need as verified by the Financial Aid Office. Participation in athletics is also a consideration.
Jerome J. and Julia Perl and Dr. Theodore Perl Pre-Medical Scholarship:
Awarded to a full-time senior in Harpur College planning to apply to medical school for fall admission immediately after graduation. Eligibility: You must have a strong academic record and demonstrated financial need as verified by the Financial Aid Office.
Dr. Dominick A. and Susan G. Artuso Scholarships:
Awarded to full-time seniors in Harpur College planning to apply to medical school for fall admission immediately after graduation. Eligibility: You must have a GPA of 3.2 or higher and have demonstrated financial need as verified by the Financial Aid Office. Preference will be given to those students whose academic record, extracurricular activities and demonstrated commitment to pre-medical studies make them most likely to be accepted to medical school. Several scholarships are typically awarded. Each may be sufficient to cover in-state tuition for approximately two semesters.
Beth F. ('78) and Dr. Anthony J. ('77) Terrana Pre-Dental Scholarship:
Awarded to a full-time senior in Harpur College planning to apply to dental school for fall admission immediately after graduation. Eligibility: You must have a strong academic record and demonstrated financial need as verified by the Financial Aid Office. Two scholarships are typically awarded. Each may be sufficient to cover in-state tuition for approximately two semesters.
The Lawrence and Rita Davis Pre-Dental Scholarship:
Awarded to a full-time senior in Harpur College planning to apply to dental school for fall admission immediately after graduation. Eligibility: You must have a GPA of 2.9 or higher and demonstrated financial need as verified by the Financial Aid Office. Preference will be given to students with a record of community service, part time employment to support their education or who are residents of the local area.
Scholarships for current sophomores (who will be juniors in the next academic year):
Edward Thorsen Memorial Scholarship:
Awarded to a junior in Harpur College planning to apply for fall admission to medical school immediately after graduation. Eligibility: You must have a gpa of 3.77 or higher. (Renewable)
Melvyn Novegrod, MD & Marci Novegrod Family Scholarship
Established in 2018 by Marci Novegrod. This scholarship will be awarded to a full-time
junior student enrolled in a pre-health course of study. The recipient must have a
minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial
need, as determined by the
FAFSA. (Renewable)
Dr. Lara M. Gordon ’93 and Robert N. Freedman ’93 Scholarship. Established in 2018 by Dr. Gordon and Mr. Freedman.
This scholarship will be awarded to a female junior student enrolled
in a pre-medical course of study. Recipient must demonstrate financial need as determined
by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Eligible recipients must
have and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.7. Preference will be given to students whose
parents are not physicians. This scholarship is renewable for one additional year
contingent upon the students continued eligibility as stated above.
Submission of applications
Scholarship applications should be submitted to the Pre-Health Professions Office between March 1 and April 1 of each year only. You may not submit applications outside of this time frame. Applicants will be notified whether or not they have been awarded a scholarship by the beginning of summer.
