CSTEP Supported Majors

Pre-health

Students receive tutoring and counseling in their fields of interest, including medicine, dentistry, podiatry, chiropractic, optometry, or veterinary medicine. The Charles Drew Pre-Health Society coordinates visits to medical schools and health care facilities. Students may join the American Medical Students Association and attend conferences. Summer studies are encouraged, and the pre-health advisor can suggest appropriate programs. Support is available to students preparing for MCATs and other entrance exams. 

Nursing

Nursing students are provided with a resource room, with textbooks for student use.The Mary E. Mahoney Nursing Support Group sponsors University-wide activities, including free blood pressure screenings and food drives for homeless shelters. Field trips take students to NYS Nursing Students Association meetings, as well as a conference just for CSTEP students. Pre-Nursing courses offer an introduction to nursing studies, and later, special review sessions help students prepare for the licensing exam. Academic advising, guidance, and tutoring are provided to support students in the nursing major. Students are encouraged to participate in externship programs.

Pre-law

Pre-Law has the goal of supporting students who plan on entering the legal profession. The Thurgood Marshall Pre-Law Society organizes visits to law schools and sponsors guest lectures and discussions on legal topics. Students are encouraged to participate fully in ongoing pre-law information sessions such as the annual Law Day and the New York Forum. Support is available for LSAT preparation. Pre-Law students are encouraged to contact their Pre-Law advisor early in their academic career.  

Engineering

Engineering involves students considering engineering and computer science studies in the University’s Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science. The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) organizes trips to national conferences and plans local meetings. CSTEP Pre-Engineering students have their own computer and study guides in a resource room, where tutoring is offered by seniors and graduate students. Participants plan guest lectures about career options and trips to explore possible future work places. Many students enjoy membership in national engineering associations. An introductory course gives an overview of engineering careers.

Accounting

Accounting students receive tutoring and advising in their field of interest. The Bert Mitchell Minority Management Organization (BMMMO) plans guest lectures about career options and trips to professional conferences. Apply for research opportunities to work with faculty members within their discipline, and to pursue internships. Support is available for certification exam preparation.

Psychology

Psychology helps students to attain success in the Binghamton undergraduate program and to prepare for admission to graduate psychology programs. The Student Psychological Association (SPA) is a community of students with a common interest of psychology and other related fields. In New York State psychologists are licensed without regard to specialty in clinical, social, physiological, and industrial areas. Assistance provided includes curriculum advising, research and clinical experiences, and preparation for graduate school, as well as tutoring, field trips, and guest speakers. Support is available to students preparing for the GRE exam.
