Summer Research FAQ

Dates: May 28th - July 19th, 2024 (8 weeks)

What is the McNair Scholars Summer Research Internship Program?
A paid summer internship at Binghamton University, during which you will work as a Research Assistant on a faculty-designed research project, at least 30 hours a week.

How many MSSRIP positions are available?
There are 20 MSSRIP positions available.

What’s the application like?
Our regular year-round application requires a 350-word essay, background information, and a minimum of two recommenders.

Our summer application requires the student's background information and the name and contact information of the professor with whom the student is interested in completing research with.

Who can apply to the MSSRIP?
Anyone who qualifies for the McNair Scholars Program can apply to the McNair Scholars Summer Research Internship Program.

What are the qualifications for the McNair Scholars Program?
To qualify, you must have an interest in attaining a PhD, completed 48 credit hours, a minimum GPA of 3.0 in each of the last three semesters, and be a US citizen or permanent resident and meet ONE of the following criteria:

  • You are a first generation college student (neither of your parents have a bachelor's degree) from a low-income background; or
  • You are from an ethnic group underrepresented in doctoral programs, (African American, Native American or Latino).

Preference is given to those students who qualify as both first generation and low-income.

How do I apply to the MSSRIP and/or McNair Scholars Program?
Download and complete the McNair Scholars Summer Research Internship Program Application and the McNair Scholars Program Application and submit both to our office.

When is the application deadline?
The McNair Scholars Program has rolling admissions and accepts applications year round. However, the Summer Research Internship Program has an early consideration application deadline. 

What does this cost?
NO COST: All services and support are provided at no cost to the students.

Why should I participate in a program like the MSSRIP?
We help students obtain paid research experience in areas of interest, network, and prepare them to apply for graduate programs and advanced careers.
