The 1098-T is a record of the financial information reported by Binghamton University to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on a student's behalf. The information includes the total amount paid for qualified tuition and related expenses in a tax year (Box 1) and the total amount of scholarships or grants disbursed in a tax year (Box 5).
Per IRS regulations, qualified tuition and related expenses in a tax year (Box 1) do not include charges for room, board, insurance, health fees, transportation fees, optional fees or other similar expenses.
A 1098-T form is automatically generated and mailed to students with a U.S. citizenship or U.S. Permanent Resident status.
As required by law, your 1098-T statement will be mailed by January 31 of the following year. Students without U.S. citizenship or U.S. Permanent Resident status or students with a non-resident alien status will not have a 1098-T automatically generated.
To request a 1098-T statement be generated, please contact Student Accounts using our Contact link. We will generate the current year’s 1098-T upon receipt of your request. Please note that your student record must have a valid social security number on file with the University’s Records Office to have a 1098-T statement produced. The university’s Federal Number is 16-1514621. This number can also be found on your 1098_T statement. Individuals completing the New York State Tax Form IT-272 will use this number for the EIN of the university.
