About Us
Binghamton Motorsport’s Baja SAE team is a student-driven motorsports team that designs, manufactures and races an off-road Baja race car. Each car competes in Baja Michigan and Baja Williamsport, competitions that include the country’s top 100 universities. The goal of the competition is to follow key engineering practices to optimize performance while minimizing cost. The cars can traverse through knee-deep bogs, handle 6-foot jumps and tow trucks five times their weight. The team had the opportunity to compete at multiple competition venues including Murphy’s Gravel Pit, the Pennsylvania College of Technology and Holly Oaks Offroad Park.
The primary purpose of this project is to provide a proving ground for students to develop their critical thinking and communication skills. Students implement the knowledge gained from their classes into various areas of the vehicle, such as vehicle dynamics, financial management, data collection and power transmission.
Binghamton Motorsports Baja SAE began as a series of disconnected senior capstone projects beginning in the 1980s. In 2021, the team joined the school under Binghamton University’s Watson Competes! programs, opening up to all students. In 2024, the team has taken on its ambitious season yet, competing in two major SAE-sanctioned events in a single year.
