The Provost's Award for Faculty Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentoring honors Binghamton University faculty who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment as mentors of Binghamton's undergraduate students in research, scholarship or creative activities outside of normal course assignments. One award will be made each year; the recipient will have his/her statement on mentoring undergraduates posted on the Undergraduate Research Center website.
Criteria Used in Selection
- actively and effectively guide students' research, creative projects and development, helping them to move from guided toward independent research and creative work
- establish expectations clearly and maintain high standards for undergraduate performance
- actively help undergraduates to develop their own scholarly profile, helping them to share the results of their work as appropriate to the discipline (e.g., meetings, conferences, committees, performances, publications)
- actively prepare students for success in applications to graduate and professional schools
Nominators should indicate their intention to nominate a faculty colleague by Friday, March 5, 2021. All nomination materials should be submitted electronically by Friday, April 2, 2021. Nominations and materials should be submitted to Allie Dugan in Enrollment Management at email@example.com.
Full-time faculty at Binghamton University are eligible.
A selection committee composed of two student representatives, four faculty members and the director of the Undergraduate Research Center will review nominations and make one recommendation to the vice provost for undergraduate education. The award winner will receive an honorarium and University-wide recognition.
Nominations will be made by program chairs and undergraduate directors. The nomination dossier must include:
- a letter of nomination from the chair or undergraduate director of an academic unit
- a current curriculum vitae of the nominee
- a selected list of the nominee's undergraduate students and their accomplishments in research or creative activities, as well as an indication of the students' further development after graduation from Binghamton
- letters of support from 5-8 students and 2-4 colleagues
- These letters should combine to show the scope of the nominee's work with undergraduates over time, to show the impact of the nominee's mentoring on students and their achievements and to indicate what makes the nominee's mentoring work exemplary.
- a nominee-authored statement of mentoring philosophy (300-500 words)
