The Division of Speech and Language Pathology (SLP) opened the Binghamton University
Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic in September 2022 to provide speech and language
therapy services to the community and clinical training opportunities for students.
This clinical service model provides clinical training to undergraduate and graduate
students and expands access to speech and language therapy services in Broome County
and the surrounding area.
Services Provided
Faculty in the Division of Speech and Language Pathology staff the programs listed below. Where indicated, services will also be available
via telehealth.
-
After School Program
Many children with communication disorders require expanded speech and language services
beyond their current school services or are not receiving services in school despite
a diagnosed need for therapy. A speech-language pathologist provides access to individual
and group therapy for children with a variety of communication disorders at the end
of the traditional school day.
Also available via telehealth: Yes
-
Aphasia Program
People living with aphasia, the loss of speech due to brain injury, often experience
social isolation, loss of friendships, reduced social network size and limited consistent
contact with others. Although research supports participation in communication groups
as a factor in aphasics' long-term success, no sustained local organizations offer
both group therapy and individual therapy. This program provides those.
-
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Program
This program provides services to children and adults with complex communication needs.
A speech-language pathologist who specializes in augmentative and alternative communication
provides evaluations and intervention, focusing on language, literacy and social communication
development. In addition to individual therapy sessions, the program includes a parent
and caregiver participation element.
Also available via telehealth: Yes
The Talk With Me! AAC group course is offered for adults over age 21 who use AAC and their caregivers.
-
Early Intervention and Preschool Program
This program focuses on ensuring young children develop the speech and language skills
critical to literacy development and academic success. In the greater Binghamton area,
there are a limited number of providers to support preschoolers with communication
disorders and their families. A speech-language pathologist provides therapy services
to children of preschool age in the community, with an emphasis on early literacy
development. In addition to individual speech and language therapy sessions, a certified
speech-language pathologist in the Hanen Program (a family-focused program for parents
of children with communication disorders) is available for parent consultation and
support. See additional details about early intervention therapy.
Also available via telehealth: Yes
-
Parkinson's SPEAK OUT!® Program
SPEAK OUT!, developed by the Parkinson Voice Project, is a therapy program tailored to people with Parkinson’s disease that focuses on
improving communication. Participants attend individual sessions twice weekly. Following
the individual therapy period, participants attend group sessions to use newly learned
skills in a more functional social setting to promote confidence and generalization
of abilities. See additional details about SPEAK OUT! therapy.
Also available via telehealth: Yes
-
Social Skills Program
This program prepares adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD),
social communication disorder (SCD) and neurodiversity for successful transitions
into adulthood. The program offers a framework for teaching social communication skills
and opportunities to practice generalizing skills learned in natural settings. Parents
and caregivers are supported through a weekly group session.
Also available via telehealth: Yes
-
Stroke and Brain Injury Program
After a stroke or other type of injury to the brain, patients often have difficulty
with speech, language and cognitive skills. Patients with suspected communication
or cognitive-linguistic deficits typically benefit from speech pathology services
to assess and treat communication abilities in the following areas: listening, speaking,
reading, writing, attention, recall and pragmatics.
Also available via telehealth: Yes
-
Stuttering Program
Therapy is provided to adults, adolescents and children who stutter to address a significant
gap in Southern Tier care delivery. People who stutter are at greater risk for reduced
academic, social and occupational outcomes. The Stuttering Clinic provides individual and group sessions to support clients and their families.
Also available via telehealth: Yes
