NEWS ABOUT FORMER FELLOWS

The Link Foundation was pleased to receive from Dr. Arthur Kamlet, one of the very first Link Foundation Fellows, some reflections on what his Link Fellowship has meant to him. Dr. Kamlet completed his PhD from the University of Michigan. Later in his distinguished career, he played significant roles at Bell Laboratories in the development of the Safeguard Anti-Ballistic Missile System and in At&T’s switching network program. Dr. Kamlet and his wife, Liz, are long-time, consistent donors to the Link Foundation. We appreciate their gifts, as well as those from other former Link Fellows and Link Foundation friends, who wish to further the noteworthy work of the Foundation.

“I met Marilyn Link in the early '60s, as a young graduate student in an
Engineering Psychology program at Michigan.  My advisor was Paul Fitts, a
senior faculty member who had worked extensively in aviation psychology.

Paul was looking to model people using servo-control principles, and I had studied servo mechanisms and received a masters degree in EE.  I was very pleased to receive the Link Foundation Fellowship to continue this work, and credit it to helping me complete the PhD program after Paul's untimely death a year later.

While at Michigan, I met and married Liz, and my older son, Mike, was born in University of Michigan Hospital. After Michigan, I spent two years as a captain in the US Army Human Engineering Labs at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, writing several papers and conference talks. My younger son, Len, was born in the post army hospital.

In the early '70s, I met Ed and Marion in New York. Marvelous people.
This was during the last strike against Mohawk Airlines, and everything
Ed predicted would befall Mohawk, unfortunately did.

After my army service, I joined the technical staff of Bell Telephone Labs in Whippany, NJ, responsible for human factors design of the Safeguard ABM system.  When that project ended, I transferred to Columbus, OH, where I led a group responsible for human factors and internal design of many systems embedded in the old Ma Bell's switching network.

After retiring after 29 years from what was soon to become Lucent Technologies, I responded to an IRS call for volunteers to train and prepare simple income tax returns for low-income taxpayers, and I have been involved in preparing taxes ever since, and have since been enrolled to practice before the IRS.

Liz and I have been involved in many volunteer activities, including veterans’ affairs, volunteering at several downtown theaters, at nursing homes, and adult education.

So Marilyn, if I never formally, publicly thanked you before, for arranging the Link Foundation Fellowship, and setting us out on a wonderful career, Thank you! And Ed & Marion.”

The Royal Aeronautical Society begins Edwin A. Link Lecture Series

The Royal Aeronautical Society has decided to honour the memory of Edwin A. Link by establishing a lecture series in his name.  The inaugural Edwin A. Link Lecture will be held on November 8, 2007 in London with the noted speaker being Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup, the present Chief of the Defense Staff of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

The Royal Aeronautical Society has many lectures named in honour of pioneers in the development of aerospace.  Barry Swainston, Vice Chairman, RAES Flight Simulation Group writes that the Society believes the Link Trainer “stands pre-eminent as a milestone in the history of flight simulation.”   Ed’s sister, Marilyn, indicates that “The lectures will indeed be an honor to Ed who is generally recognized as the Founder of the Simulation Industry.”  Marilyn Link is a former Trustee and currently serves as a Special Advisor to the Link Foundation.

A second lecture is being planned with an anticipated date of April 9,2008 in Washington DC. The speaker will be Bruce Whitman, president of FlightSafety International. The venue has yet to be confirmed, but will probably be at Britsh Embassy. Details for this lecture will be forthcoming.

More information and publicity on these lectures will be forthcoming. You may also obtain further information at the Royal Aeronautical Society's web page at :
