Various University departments accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover to process payment for tuition, room, board, and other miscellaneous fees. As the volume of credit card activity continues to increase, so does the likelihood of fraudulent card use. Credit card fraud and identity theft are constant concerns that need to be taken seriously.
University credit card processes must comply with the merchant services banking contract and Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). In addition to ensuring that all transactions are properly processed in accordance with the banking contract the Revenue Accounting office can provide important information to proactively address required cardholder data security measures and to help ensure that your collections are directed to the appropriate fund source. The card acceptance instructions below are designed to help you reduce the risk of your department and the University being victimized. Each time a customer presents a credit card for payment, do the following:
- Swipe the card or take an imprint.
- Obtain card authorization.
- Verify that the customer is the card member.
- Verify the card's valid date.
- Match the embossed number on the front of the card to the number on the back of the card and the terminal receipt.
- Compare the customer's signature on the terminal receipt to the signature on the back of the card and verify it is the same as the name embossed on the front of the card.
