Can I limit the amount of students that I am connected with?
Yes. You can limit the amount of students who reach out to you each month, quarter or year. After that limit is reached, students will not be able to request a connection or meeting, but will have the ability to see your profile and send you a message. You can edit these limits anytime in your account settings.
-
What type of students will participate in this program?
Any Binghamton University student is eligible to participate.
-
How do I indicate my availability for one-time mentoring?
When you create your profile, you will be asked to describe your general availability. To change your availability and other preferences, log into the program and click “Edit Your Profile.”
-
How do I know if a student wants to connect with me?
You will receive an email notification request in your inbox for the email address you log in with. You will have to log into the program to accept the connection.
-
How do “meetings” occur?
This is designed to be a distance mentoring program so we may connect students and alumni from anywhere in the world. Most meetings will occur via phone, Skype, Facetime or other conference tools you may have available. However, if you do happen to be in the same location as the student requesting a meeting or connection, you are welcome to meet with him or her in person. The meeting should take place at your workplace or another public space (e.g., coffee shop, park, restaurant).
-
How long should a meeting with a student last?
Each meeting should last one hour, but you can schedule the session for as much time as necessary.
-
Who can see my information?
All student mentees and mentors are able to see the majority of your information. Your phone number and email address are kept private; only the administrators and a mentee you have connected with for a facilitated connection are able to see this information.
-
Am I able to deny a request?
Absolutely. However, please respond to the student with a short explanation of why you’re unable to connect (e.g., not enough time, too many current connections, or you do not think you would be a good match for them).
-
Can I provide my contact information to my student mentee and stop using the program?
Yes, if it’s easier for you to email directly, that’s fine. There are some great tools available within the program, but you are free to use whatever you feel works best.
-
I’m having problems navigating the program, can you help?
Absolutely! You can contact the administrator (alumni@binghamton.edu) to walk you through any issue you are having.
