Educational Interventions

The Purpose of Educational Interventions

College is an opportunity both inside and outside of the classroom to engage in learning; and part of this learning is for each student to develop as an individual adult who is engaged in their community(ies).  Part of this learning comes from making mistakes, and having the opportunity to learn from those mistakes in an educational environment.  To that end, the Office of Student Conduct looks to provide students engaging with our office or who have been found responsible for violating the University’s Student Code of Conduct, the opportunity to reflect and learn.

There are four educational interventions, here's what to expect:

  • Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Office Referral:
    • E-Check-Up to Go - Working closely with the Office of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Prevention, students who are involved in first time and minor violations involving alcohol and/or cannabis, may be asked or required to complete this brief module (about 10 minutes).  The student is asked questions regarding their use of alcohol or cannabis including frequency and amount, health information negative consequences, etc. and provides the student with real time personal anonymous feedback and information on their use. This feedback and resources have been found to reduce the frequency of drinking, BAC and negative consequences of consuming alcohol/using cannabis. Our colleagues in the ATOD Office only receive confirmation of completion of the module - the specific results are only given to the student completing the module.  Students are usually given about two weeks to complete the module.
    • BASICS/CASICS - If students have subsequent minor violations involving alcohol or cannabis, they may be asked or required to engage in a more intensive reflection module with the ATOD Office.  This program involves a more lengthy online assessment regarding alcohol/cannabis use, followed up by a one on one meeting between the student and the ATOD Office staff to gain additional information on harm reduction with regard to their substance use. Students are given about 3-4 weeks to complete both the assessment and follow-up meeting.
  • Fire Safety Module: Watch a brief video on fire safety awareness when living in the residence halls and then take a brief online quiz about what you learned.  Students are usually given about two weeks to complete the module and accompanying quiz.

  • Decision Making Workshop: This in person workshop educated participants on ethical decision making, asks them to consider ethical decision making individually and with their peers and educated students on various decision making strategies to use when considering a host of decisions they make in their day to day lives.  Workshops are offered Monday-Fridays, usually during the business day.  There are several workshops offered each month and students are often given a month to register for and attend a workshop.

  • Community Awareness Workshop: Using an interactive in-person workshop format, this workshop helps students examine their values, understand the aspects of being a part of a community, especially here at Binghamton, makes them aware of the impact of individuals on great communities and asks them to reflect on the community member, they aspire to be.  While this workshop isn’t offered as frequently as our Decision Making Workshop, it is offered several times a semester. If there are not workshops available with a student’s class schedule that is before their deadline, they may reach out to the staff to arrange an alternative workshop time.

You've been assigned an educational intervention, now what?

  • E-Check-up and BASICS/CASICS - either in their outreach letter from our office, an Administrative Agreement the student signs or a hearing board decision letter, there will be information notifying the student that they’ve been asked/required to complete this sanction and by which date they must complete it.  They are then told that the Office for Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Prevention will be contacting them via email in the next several days with more information about the module or program and login information.  Any issues with module access or login information can be directed to the ATOD office directly.

  • Fire Safety Module - In an outreach letter from our office, or an Administrative Agreement the student signs or a hearing board decision letter, the requirement to complete the Fire Safety Module will be included along with the due date.  Additionally, a link to the Panopto video and accompanying quiz will be included that the student completes at a time convenient for them.

  • Decision Making Workshop - In an outreach letter from our office, or an Administrative Agreement the student signs or a hearing board decision letter, the requirement to complete the Decision Making Workshop will be included along with the due date. Then either in that email or a subsequent email the next day, there will be a link to a google form sent to the student to complete and register for an upcoming workshop.  Workshops must be registered for AT LEAST 48 hours in advance.

  • Community Awareness Workshop - In an outreach letter from our office, or an Administrative Agreement the student signs or a hearing board decision letter, the requirement to complete the Community Awareness Workshop will be included along with the due date. Then either in that email or a subsequent email the next day, there will be a link to a google form sent to the student to complete and register for an upcoming workshop.  Workshops must be registered for AT LEAST 48 hours in advance.
