TESOL (MA)
Our non-certification TESOL (MA) program enables graduates to teach in English as a Second Language (ESL) programs on college campuses or in other English programs across the globe. This track is also suitable for international students who wish to be involved in English education around the world, such as ESL programs in higher education or other intensive English programs.

Coursework: None
Certification: None
International Students: International Applicants should submit a translation of their transcripts from the
World Education Services: International Credential Evaluation (WES).

Applicants to the TESOL (MA) program must submit all of the following materials:
- Graduate School online application
- Official transcripts for all college study. Applicants should have a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least a B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale)
- At least two letters of recommendation from individuals who supervise you, such as a faculty advisor, course instructor, or employer, who can attest to your competence as a teacher and your potential to successfully complete graduate study
- Resume, to include current employment, previous professional education experience (including student teaching), volunteer work and other experiences with children and youth
- Personal Statement: Please write an essay of 2-3 pages, double-spaced that addresses
these three topics:
- Your academic and professional background(s) related to TESOL
- Your reason(s) for applying for the MA TESOL program at Binghamton University
- Your educational and professional goals beyond graduate school
Please note: This personal statement requires foci different from the generic Graduate School personal statement instructions. This is an important part of the application. Be as specific as possible, including examples where appropriate.

Educational Studies (MS) with a concentration in Community Schools
The Educational Studies (M.S.) program with a concentration in Community Schools is designed for those interested in the general study of education and community schools and does not lead to certification.
Applicants to the Educational Studies (MS) program must submit all of the following materials:

Official transcripts for all college study. Applicants should have a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least a B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale)

At least two letters of recommendation from individuals who supervise you, such as a faculty advisor, course instructor, or employer, who can attest to your academic abilities and your potential to successfully complete graduate study, especially researching and writing academic papers. It's best if it comes from a professor of a recent course or from an academic advisor who has taught you and graded your work.

Resume, to include current employment, previous professional education experience (including student teaching), volunteer work and other experiences with children and youth

Personal statement: an essay of 4-5 double-spaced pages or 1,000 words that describes:

Why you are interested in the Educational Studies program with a concentration in community schools
- Your professional goals, including what you hope to contribute to the field of education.
- An issue or topic you might like to research for your culminating master's paper/project (a couple of paragraphs).

The essay is important in judging a student’s suitability for the program. It helps us match qualified applicants with full-time faculty members as advisors, a key part of the admission process.
