Students celebrating their graduation from Binghamton University.

Binghamton Fund for Opportunity Scholarships

  • Nearly two-thirds of every class Binghamton admits cannot enroll and graduate without financial assistance. Donors to the new Binghamton Fund for Opportunity Scholarships are providing life-changing gifts that help the University recruit and retain top students — and offer them crucial support to succeed once they’re here.
  • With the gap between affordability and accessibility continuing to widen for many families, these gifts make a Binghamton degree possible for fantastic students who couldn’t make ends meet without it.
  • Halima Rashid ’23 is one of those students. Her life took a 180-degree turn after the COVID-19 pandemic began. The market where she worked closed for good. Her family lost her mom’s income, too. “Being the first to attend college felt extremely exciting, but we felt stressed and overwhelmed with the expense that college life brought,” said Rashid, whose younger brother is also a college student. “With the pandemic, life became even more stressful. Being able to receive help means the world. It really motivated me to keep working hard.”

Fellowship for Racial Justice in honor of Dominic Davy

  • Inaugural recipient, Jarvis Marlow-McCowin, is a student in the College of Community and Public Affairs doctoral program in Community, Research and Action.
  • “The fact that someone saw something in me; my work; my commitment to racial justice, to social justice, to my research; that they are now providing me with this opportunity to have financial resources to continue my education without thinking about the stress about how I may pay for a doctorate — it gives me the reassurance that I can do this,” he said.

Bryant Lin ’21

  • Bryant Lin ’21 said the scholarship provided much-needed relief and the opportunity to explore career options. He ultimately decided on the field of information technology as a great fit to leverage his accounting degree and love for computers.
  • “This period of personal growth was made possible in part by the financial support given to me, and I am extremely grateful for that,” he said.
